Only missed Jura. D'oh! Also there is no island called "Shetland" or "Orkney". The Orkney Isles and the Shetland Isles' largest islands are both called "mainland". Also people on Anglesey generally call it by its Welsh name and the people of Skye and Lewis are mostly Gaelic speaking too. I done one of these with the top 50 islands. Too hard for Sporcle tho'. Making it all easy :-P

srsly. I've been ripped off: http://www.sporcle.com/games/Greenock/islands You'll be hearing from my lawyers Sporcle.... or would be if I had one. Also Most people from Lewis just call it Lewis and don't give the full name and seven minutes is a bit much

lol, apparently most of the people on here aren't British. I only got 3, and that still puts me in the 81st percentile. I'm proud of myself for knowing Isle of Man.

You forgot the "d" in mainland for the Shetland one. Also can you please put up the island's rank when we answer in. It's not a major thing but it'd be cool to see.

leonjkennedy - the British Isles is just a geographical name, not a political one. The island of Ireland remains part of them.

Why the feck don't you accept Lewis and/or Isle of Lewis, Harris is part of it, not an island name. Its called Isle of Lewis in the Times Atlas. Its this pommy nitpicketyness that cost me 15/15, so I will give myself it anyway

14/15, as I don't consider Ireland to be a British island. There are other names you can use for the archipelago that don't imply that it is entirely British.

Accept Britain for GB... there is no difference. Theres a dif between the UK and GB, but GB and Britain are simply different usages, Britain is probably used more.

@EGaffney - name one? The British Isles is the standard geographic description. I'm Irish and like most people, I'm not offended by the term. It is simply descriptive, not political.

@EGaffney - no one is suggesting that Ireland is British; it is *geographically* part of the British Isles. There is no political connotation in the name. I agree that expecting both Lewis and Harris is a bit tough .. and it took me about 7 goes to get the correct spelling for Anglesey! :o)

I got Britain, Ireland, Wight (after trying Wright) and Man. Shocked that Ireland has such a huge lead over Britain. No, Ireland isn't British, but its part of the islands. For that matter, it would probably be unhealthy to call people in Scotland British.

Why I *nearly* missed great britain was that I was told that Great Britain included the likes of Isle of Wight, the scotish islands and isle of man; and that Britain was just England, Wales and Scotland. Especially as doesn't Northern Island come under Great Britain? Or is that United Kingdom? So confusing. I knew the island would be on there, just wasn't sure under what name.

@Caesar, The full name of the country is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. So Ni is separate to Great Britain, but is part of the UK.

great britain does not include eire, as you've said (raged). british isles though just seems to mean the islands themselves so leave it. also channel islands?? maybe too far away?

The channel islands are part of the British Isles, even though they are not part of the UK. However they are all smaller than the islands listed in the quiz which is probably why they aren't included.

I don't think thatthe channel islands count as part of the British Isles. They certainly are not part of the UK (they are not a part of Eng, Scot, Wales or NI), but Crown Colonies. But as people have said, this quiz is about the geographical 'British Isles'.
