It's Roberto Dinamite, not Robeto
Mar 25th, 2009 at 04:54 GMT
davidr, this is a GREAT quiz. Bravo!
Mar 25th, 2009 at 05:41 GMT
I don't really follow soccer, but I think one of the great sports facts of all time is that Brazil never lost a game in which both Pele and Garrincha played.
Mar 25th, 2009 at 06:35 GMT
No Fred?! He's got the funniest name...
Mar 25th, 2009 at 06:45 GMT
How on earth did I forget Ronaldinho. Quite funny that there is no 'p' in Pele's name.

anyone know what "inho" means? I don't know any spanish.
Mar 25th, 2009 at 07:39 GMT
Sócrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira? surprised he wasn't included - he was the first player i thought of (other than PELE) - guess his name wouldn't have fit in the blue box. And '-inho' is portuguese for little (so ronaldinho is translatable as little ronaldo .... roughly)
Mar 25th, 2009 at 07:51 GMT
Another cool name: Geronimo Maria Barreto Claudimar da Silva = Cacau
Mar 25th, 2009 at 08:13 GMT
Great quiz. 18/20 - never even heard of Zizinho or Roberto Dinamite.
Mar 25th, 2009 at 08:55 GMT
@Max Q: Fred is a great name but I only included people who'd played for the Brazilian national team.
Mar 25th, 2009 at 09:01 GMT
@beatrix k.: I'd have included Sócrates (and Emerson, too) but I thought there were already enough who were just known by their first name. Maybe I should have put them in, anyway.
Mar 25th, 2009 at 10:49 GMT
beatrix: anyone is little compared to ronaldo these days lol
Mar 25th, 2009 at 11:00 GMT
@Zac....The official language of Brazil is Portuguese, not Spanish.
Mar 25th, 2009 at 11:13 GMT
Great quiz! I didn't do as well as I thought I would, though. :(
Mar 25th, 2009 at 12:20 GMT
Good quiz, but some of the name were too predictable. And Fred has 10 international caps for Brazil.
Mar 25th, 2009 at 12:34 GMT
Muito bom. Missed a couple, but loved that one.
Mar 25th, 2009 at 13:25 GMT
Take a bow davidr. Fantastic quiz. I'm really glad that Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite's little brother could never quite pronounce Ricardo as a little kid, instead coming out with Kaka. He has saved the collective football fans of the globe a lot of time. Btw, Fred has played quite a few times for Brazil, he even scored in the 2006 world cup.
Mar 25th, 2009 at 13:31 GMT
Fantastic quiz, although Socrates is a legend and should be there. He has more caps and is far more well known than Roberto Dinamite.
Mar 25th, 2009 at 14:04 GMT
@Koumba and Mr B.: Aha, there are two Freds! Frederico Chaves Guedes has played for Brazil (only nine times, as far as I can see) and Helbert Frederico Carreiro da Silva hasn't. I looked at the wrong one.
Mar 25th, 2009 at 14:36 GMT
Nice Quiz, but Rivaldo and Ronaldo are still active in profesional football
Mar 25th, 2009 at 14:55 GMT
Rivaldo, Ronaldo and Juninho are still active. Nice quiz also. Like the others, Socrates should be on here!
Mar 25th, 2009 at 15:09 GMT
They're active, but not on the national team anymore and thats what the dates are for.

Missing: Arriaga, Arriaga II, Barriaga, Aruglia, and Pizzozza
Mar 25th, 2009 at 15:48 GMT
Six... that was rough- I should've done better, though considering the overall difficulty, perhaps not much better. Like some other people, I think the years should be their active years, not just their years on the national team. Otherwise, good quiz. I'd actually like to see a women's version (are there ANY Sporcle quizzes specifically on female athletes?), with your Formigas and Danielas and Martas and so forth... of course, most of them just use their first names, so maybe it wouldn't be that great a quiz.
Mar 25th, 2009 at 15:50 GMT
Oh, and I love the front-page write-up. Classic.
Mar 25th, 2009 at 16:50 GMT
@kicking222: apart from Tennis and the Olympics, women's sport gets very little coverage (in the UK, at least; I can't speak for other countries). The BBC have hardly mentioned the fact that England have just won the Women's Cricket World Cup. There is a quiz on the women who've won the Grand Slam in Tennis and the various Tennis tournament quizzes include the men's as well as women's champions.
Mar 25th, 2009 at 17:59 GMT
-inho means little does it not? like ronaldinho is little ronaldo?
Mar 25th, 2009 at 18:44 GMT
@ brian. that is not entirely true, as they did officaly state that they are not playing for the national team anymore. Ronaldo still wants to be called on.
Mar 25th, 2009 at 18:52 GMT
If only Hulk had international caps!
Mar 25th, 2009 at 18:58 GMT
Mar 25th, 2009 at 19:00 GMT
Which one is the guy in the picture for the quiz?
Mar 25th, 2009 at 19:28 GMT
@Bryan - I think you'll find you're right! I was told this by a guy who'd lived in Brazil for a few years.
Mar 25th, 2009 at 21:07 GMT
@Tom: It's Edison Arantes do Nascimento being held aloft by Jair Ventura Filho after Brazil's victory in the 1970 Word Cup final (in which both of them scored).
Mar 25th, 2009 at 21:09 GMT
@davidr: You really do your research for these, don't you?
Mar 25th, 2009 at 21:15 GMT
Also sad about Fred being missing. Inky/Blinky/Pinky/Clyde, Ronaldo/Ronaldinho/Robinho/Fred. Also, no love for Wagner Love?
Mar 26th, 2009 at 22:07 GMT
Aaarrrgh! How did I not get Nelson ####!!!!
Mar 26th, 2009 at 22:58 GMT
In honor of Zac's comment ... where are Maradona and Messi jajaja

This quiz is not American enough.
Mar 27th, 2009 at 10:02 GMT
@mark: Maradona is omitted because the quiz is about football players and Maradona plays handball. :-P
Mar 28th, 2009 at 23:52 GMT
@Mike: Isn't it Vagner Love?
