| Haunter, I agree, Pay-Per-View helped kill boxing's mass appeal. Even the fights on regular HBO are on late at night. Of course, it means a lot more $ for the fighters and promoters, but one wonders if that money will still be there in 25 years -- how can young people follow boxing these days? The other contributing factors are, of course, the alphabet soup of titles as well as the extra weight classes. There used to be 8 champions; now there are probably 100, at least half of whom aren't really that good, so who can keep track? The extra weight classes do make sense, as 15 lbs is a big difference in boxing, but the "super middleweight" title doesn't have a lot of tradition behind it. ... Also Haunter, this is not a list of every title fight, just the times the title changed hands, as you seemed to be confused by older champions being "one and done." |
