#3 totally crossed my mind, but i didnt enter it because i didnt think it was that big. I've only really seen those stores in small towns, so i didnt think they would even compete with stores like #1 aka the devil of retail

It's been a long time since the days of Gibson's, Woolworth's Five and Dime, and TG&Y. Wal-Mart drove them all out of my hometown.

chodanutz, Kroger owns about twenty different grocery brands across the country. Ralphs and Food 4 Less in California, Fred Meyer and QFC in Oregon and Washington, Smiths in Utah and Nevada, Fry's in Arizona, etc, etc. Kroger exists in 18 of the 20 largest markets in the US

I was surprised to see Supervalu on here. I only guessed it because I work for them. I guess since they own Acme and Superfresh it adds u?

This is a great puzzle. I love ones like this that ask your brain to work in a broad way.

Chris968, Supervalu became huge when they bought more than 2000 Albertsons stores (including the Acme stores that you mention). Albertsons alone was in the top 20, though Supervalu did not buy all of their stores, only about 2000 - the other 500 or so were sold to various other countries.

Never heard of Kroger - guess I'm in one of those two top-20 markets without one. Also not familiar with Safeway or Publix. Hadn't heard of Supervalu either, although apparently Shaw's (which we have here) is part of it. I guess my neck of the woods just has a lot more smaller/independent grocery stores than most...

Is that 344,992 million or 344.992 million?

@Vernon: It's gotta be 344,992 million as it says (i.e. 344.992 billion).

This one was really fun!! Entering Albertsons brought up SuperValu, so entering Ralphs should bring up Krogers. I think Pennys should work for J.C. Pennys.

@Alex - wikipedia describes Costco as a "Warehouse Club". Non-traders can be members. In fact, one of my work colleagues is a member here in the UK.

I was surprised amazon wasn't on the list. I thought the source might have just qualified the data somehow, but I looked it up and amazon is only #70 worldwide. Wow.

Jeez, I was figuring out what happened to Kmart since it is not on the list, knowing they were struggling. Then I remembered they merged with Sears. Times can change.

For the most part, I only included alternate brands owned by a retailer when the retailer does not operate under the company name. So since SuperValu and TJX are not stores unto themselves, I accepted subsidiaries. But otherwise, I did not attempt to accept sub-brands.

Phil, did you include all subsidiaries? Because SuperValu here is Shaw's & Star Market, but neither of those worked for me.

The fact that Publix in only in Fla and Ga for them to be on the list is impressive.

Publix is in more than just FL and GA. I know it's in TN. Used to go to it all the time when I lived in Nashville.

If Albertsons brings up SuperValu, then Vons should bring up Safeway and Ralphs (and the other 19 companies as Shoban mentioned) should bring up Kroger.

I've never heard of Publix or TJX. Guess that's a disadvantage of living in Alaska. Most of the retailers on the list we don't have up here.

Jason is right. I live in Lebanon, TN just outside Nashville and we have publix's all over the place. I think we should have less time for this. Maybe five minutes? I got them all with 3:61 left on the clock.
