25/25 hell yeah! Great quiz. I love the ones that are hard to get and to know them all straight off, but are guessable with a little imagination and deep thinking. I think that is exactly the makings of a great quiz, and love the site. Thanks Sporcle and davidr.

20/25...missed a few small countries that were obvious after I saw them. Never would have guessed #25 though.

I would have got all of them if Holland was acceptable for Netherlands. Although Holland refers specifically to 2 provinces in the Netherlands, it is recognized worldwide as an alternative. They even use it in the Netherlands, particularly in relation to the football team (which has 'Holland' printed on it's merchandise). The team is cheered on at matches with "Holland!", and the term is also used for promotion, because the name "Holland" is the best known worldwide.

I live in the Netherlands and I'm very offended if people say I'm from Holland, like you say to a Scott he's English. I'm Limburgs and I'm proud of it :)

These country quizzes rock. Most populous countries, wealthiest countries, etc. I love them because if you have a good knowledge of geography and history, you can guess your way through them. I wonder if the history is clear enough to do "oldest countries".

How about sneaking in US States into this quiz. I know California would be number 9...sure New York and Texas would crack the top 25 too.

I would imagine a lot of nations are in this list simply because a lot of people live there. I'd be interested in a "gdp per capita" quiz and I very much doubt that china or indonesia would be in the top30.

Dear god, how did I forget the UK? Anyway, this isn't a particularly great quiz, simply because all you have to do is think of countries that are really big and/or first-world Eurasian nations. I mean, there have been worse quizzes, but I don't think this is among the best.

I think you ought to make "The Netherlands" an acceptable answer as well. A lot of people refer to it as that (including someone who commented above me) and it would have gotten me all 25. :(

No. 24 was probably the last country I thought would be up there...I was certain countries like Sweden or Finland would be above them. I'm actually surprised Hong Kong isn't up on the list, although I guess it's counted as part of China. For its size, Taiwan sure is impressive for cracking the Top 25 list.

@Robert Lo: Hong Kong is part of China, yes. If it were an independent country, it would be in 39th place. (41st in the table linked from the top of the page but that includes entries for the world and the EU, too.)

@Kamara853 and chillicothe20: Remember that GDP includes all economic activity within the country. Mexico and Indonesia have *much* higher populations than Canada and Saudi Arabia so, even though those people aren't so rich, they're buying more stuff between them.

Great quiz! I got everything on the first try but it took me a while to get the last 3. Forgot that Taiwan qualified as a country (even though I consider it one) =X. Didn't expect Poland or Thailand either. I notice that South Africa is 25th on more than one of these quizzes.. o_O

Glad you all enjoyed the quiz. It had never occurred to me that people would want to type out `The Netherlands' instead of just `Netherlands' so I never thought to add it as an alternative. I see it's been added now.

@ared: Per-capita GDP is on its way. China and Indonesia are 132nd and 158th in the CIA's list. That list includes many things that aren't countries and that have higher per-capita GDPs than either of those two countries. I lack the enthusiasm to go through and count them all but I guess neither China nor Indonesia is in the top hundred.
