Wow, that's how you can tell I'm out of the times the ONLY one I got was 'Icky Thump'...don't ask me why. I'm more into singles than memorizing an entire cd I guess.

Like most Grammy categories, this one seems to always lag behind. "MTV Unplugged" won but not "Nevermind." "Zooropa" won but not "Achtung Baby." "Icky Thump" won but not "White Blood Cells." It's not quite as bad as the Best Album rule of thumb of "Make something great and then wait 20-25 years", but still.

To quote the Hon. Chuck D.: "Who gives a **** about a goddamn grammy?" Now the Teen Choice Awards.....there's an redible acknowledgment from the arts community.

The term alternative hasn't gotten any less dubious in the last 20 years. U2 was mainstream in 1994, just as Radiohead is in 2009. It's a ridiculous category! That's from someone who called themselves a fan of "alternative" music in 1992, rocking the night away to Pearl Jam, as well as a collection of white boy bands that played stuff that wasn't metal or hard rock - just something a little less loud, a little more melodic, with oh so important lyrics. Alternative is essentially "college radio"...

Coldplay rocks!!! That being said, I think it would make more sense to have to guess the artist here rather than the album.

I agree with MovieDynamic: you should give the titles and have to guess the artist.

Kind of an outdated category, I haven't bought an album in years.

@ MovieDYnamic and Foghorn, ok we can do that. Added a link to the top of the page and released the artists version. Enjoy!

i don't even know what "alternative" means anymore. this grammy should just be called "best non-hip-hop-pop-or-country album".

@zalagreensbury: Funny, "Icky Thump" was the only one I missed. Just couldn't think of the name.

Hey everyone, hope you're having a good weekend, and hope you enjoyed the quiz. I personally still prefer it having to guess the album- after all, it's the Grammy for Best Alternative Album- but here's the magic of Sporcle: everyone can have it their own way! We all win!

love the quiz. the choices are pretty shocking, the albums are good in their own right but the way they've stuck avidly to the white stripes is evidence of a serious lack of care. also the fact zooropa was chosen in '94 reflects badly, to put things into perspective, in '92 they released achtung baby, amazing album. zooropa was basically a runaway EP

Alex, glad you liked the quiz, but I have to say: I stick avidly to the Stripes, and I always will. (At least it's not for a lack of care, but because I love every album they've ever made, and I trust that their next album will be similarly wonderful.) As it happens, I'm wearing a Stripes shirt at the moment, though that is just a coincidence. With that said, to each his own.

Stop dissing the Grammy's. Sure, Achtung Baby was better than Zooropa and White Blood Cells was better than Get Behind Me Satan, but there were other great albums those years and it can't always work out that the best work get the most appreciation. Also, everyone is bringing up a problem with the genre "alternative music." There is no real "sound" that defines it, so it's dumb how whenever someone becomes popular they're no longer part of that genre of music.

@Kevin & RedLIon, I agree, Tom Waits is fantastic. I love Rain Dogs. Have to disagree with John Lambeth though - that Wilco album is fantastic, certainly better than their first album at least.
