| @radish - I hope you're alone on this one. The concept of memorable songs is a tad subjective. We can remember what we want if we like it enough. Anyhow, "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "Sloop JohnB," and "God Only Knows" are played on classic stations from time to time. The latter of which is considered by McCartney as the greatest pop song ever written.
The memorability of the album may be as much the fault of Capitol records and Mike Love. Both parties essentially allowed it to be released album under the band's name thinking that this would just be a pet project (no pun) until they returned to "the formula." So the promotion for the album was minimal.
I mean, "Barbara Ann" gets to number 2 in 1965, and "God Only Knows" hits 39 a year later. Heck, "The Little Girl I Once Knew" was the bridge track to Pet Sounds, and that at least made it to #12. This is a long winded way of saying that you shouldn't hold the artist accountable for the distributor's shortcomings. |
