Yup, all those Yankee legends like Manny and Miggy and Helton and Johan... hey, didn't Soriano use to play for the Yanks? You really should think before you make silly comments like that.

Kevin, don't be a douche. Clearly he was making a joke. Obviously not everybody on this list played for the Yankees... he's just making the observation that for a team that didn't make the playoffs, they sure do overpay their "stars".

Well the top 5 on this list were all signed by the Yankees (or had their contract traded to the Yankees). So joking or not, it's at least true that the high end of the list is "how many Yankees can you name?"

its kinda funny how the first person to have a $100 million-plus contract is not that great. also, kevin you need to get off the yankees, they overpay their players, everyone knows it. the yankees know it, their fans know it.

referring to the quiz description there are some things to think about -- yeah it is frustrating to see these people get paid so much because they are doing what you wish you did, and peoples jobs like teachers and cop etc are more important to society -- however think of it this way, on a basis (hypothetically) that people get paid strictly on how hard their job is, or on a basis of how many other people could do their job or how easily they could be replaced by someone else.... these people on the list are the absolute only people in the world that can do what they do. no one could replace them (alex rodriguez was the only person ever to reach 500 HR that fast if im not mistaken), very few could compel you to watch their sport like these men do... while a teacher or policeman could be replace by millions of different people, millions could do their job

Sam: A-Rod was the youngest player to hit 500, but he did it in the 3rd shortest time. I don't know who the others are (I beleive McGwire may be one), but it was cited as such in the broadcast.

Sad but true, Sam. People just look at these numbers with their heart, not their head. It's all about supply and demand and the amount of revenue these guys generate for their team. People are still willing to fork over the money to watch these guys play and they're making the Steinbrenners of the world rich, so why shouldn't the players be well-compensated? They're the drawing card. If people were willing to pay loads of money to watch me do my job, I'd be a multi-millionaire too.

One more thing; this is what happens when a group of people are exploited and underpaid for years and years, as was the case with many pro athletes back in the day. Except for the superstars, most of them didn't make enough by playing to support themselves; they had to work in the offseason. It's just like the unions; the working man was screwed for years and years, now they're getting exceptional compensation packages that non-union employees can only dream about.

That's what happens when you deal with Scott Boras... in fact.. how many of these players are managed by Scott Boras?

Re: Boras clients - A-Rod (second deal allegedly negotiated without Boras, but his fingerprints are all over it), Teixeira, Manny (although he wasn't with Boras when he signed that deal), Zito, Beltran. Wells might be, not sure. I know for a fact that Jeter, Sabathia, Santana, Soriano, Giambi, Griffey, and Pujols are not represented by Boras.

I'm sorry, but the fact that the Yankees have almost double the payroll than every other team is basically cheating, just like steroids. They should take away all the records away since 2001, as well as all the World Series the Yankees have won. Oh wait a minute....

thought for sure Aramis Ramirez signed for $100 the same year Soriano did. Ditto on the relative bargain for Pujols. Any way to get some leniency on the spelling of Teixeira? That's just not fair :p

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Pujols has been the best hitter over the last 8 years out of all the offensive players on this list. 7 years, $100 million is a steal given some of the other names on this list. Just to think... 25 years ago people were going nuts when Nolan Ryan signed a 4 year, $4.5 million contract. Imagine what an arm like that would go for nowadays.

These GMs should read all of those authors who throw out the stats that show these guys are overpaid for what they actually contribute to the team. Unfortunately, sometimes you don't have much of a choice since it's hard to rely on finding blue chip prospects.
