Only EUFA could offer its best player a gold balloon. No wonder UK players do not bother to win it!

Can you please call all of the Milan instances either AC Milan or Milan? It looks sort of ridiculous to mix them up.

Stoitchkov (with a second t) should be accepted as well as Stoichkov.

What was the technicality that kept out Pele? I didn't get anyone before '97 but Keegan. Guess I'm too young!

Interesting (to me) that Henry or Beckham never won this trophy. Any quiz that includes Papin is ok by me, though!

can't believe cannavaro is the only defender on the list. maldini or thuram would have been worthy winners.

@Wozzelini - Franz Beckenbauer was also a defender - possibly the best to have ever played the great game.

Forgot that they'd changed the rules so that non-Europeans could win it. Should have twigged when I put Ronaldo and got the buck-toothed Brazilian as well as the Portuguese diver, but for some reason I didn't...

Wicked quiz. Will be interesting to see who wins it this year, I can't really see any clear contenders. Spose they will just give it to a player at an Italian club like they always do when they can get away with it.

@lulubelles - Short of him punching a member of the crowd, Lionel Messi is an absolute cert. I'll be gobsmacked if he doesn't win it this year.

Funny how Blackpool haven't had a player on there since the 41 year old Stanley Matthews won the inaugural prize. Maybe Gary Taylor-Fletcher for 2009?

@B-rock - Shevchenko was good before he went to Chelsea! Di Stefano was a 'naturalised' European.

ChanandlerBong - go back to .tv, you know what I mean. Gerrard has to be in with a chance for 2009. Not likely though, especially if Barcelona with the Champions League.

Yeah but if Gerrard does win it (which he won't) it'll only get robbed when he's playing away in the Champions league or England duty!

How did I get a negative rating for my comment? It's an alternate spelling of his name. It was always spelled that way on MLSnet, and it's even mentioned on his Wikipedia page.

Re Stoichkov/Stoitchkov. Bulgarians use the Cyrillic alphabet so therefore it's not surprising if there's more than one 'translation' into the Roman alphabet.

Good game but addding nationality to club would make it easier for the non-football geeks. Nice to have a few European quizzes on sports

Shola is a shoo-in for 2009- but not for this prize. He's bound to win lump of the year. They really should have diver of the year. What a tough competition!

Great quiz. Amazing to think of some of the great players that never won the award - Bobby Moore, Paulo Maldini, Raul, Peter Crouch.
