awesome quiz, others that might be considered are Booker T. and the M.G.'s, Hootie & the Blowfish and George Thorogood and the Destroyers

wouldn't have gotten prince's band if it weren't for that great charlie murphy/dave chappelle skit. also, how about frankie valli and the 4 seasons?

Hootie & the Blowfish aren't the singer and his backing bands name, they're named after friends of the band, one who looked like an owl and one who looked like a blowfish. And I hate that I know that.

Good stuff, also maybe George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic and Morris Day and the Time. Oh and an excellent bonus answer should be Jesse and the Rippers.

Morris Day and the Time possibly. Great quiz idea though.

Niiiiiiiiiiice quiz. Uh......people.......is everyone going to name one of the million artists not included in this quiz? These are good choices- equal parts hard and easy.

Missed Ben Harper and Otis Redding. Matt/Hackzor, I've always known "The Time" to be just that (no Morris Day) and "The NPG or New Power Generation" should be acceptable for Prince too. Think he had them credited all through the early 90's

Looking at the previous comments, I'd say there's more than enough fodder and interest for a sequel to this quiz, and there are other possibilities I can think of too. Are you listening, O Great Sporclemeister? ;)

My brain hurts (the sign of a good quiz). I am looking forward to a sequel!

Being from England, i'd never heard of Edie Brickell or Paul Revere, but this was a great quiz and I second raggedyanne's idea of a sequel. There are so many good ones left (Lloyd Cole and the Commotions is my personal favourite).

When Edie Brickell & New Bohemians first hit the scene, they were adamant that they were NOT "The" New Bohemians. Just New Bohemians... FWIW

Elvis Costello's backing band on his first CD was the Clovers, although he released that CD solo. Four of his most recent CDs were with the Imposters, which definitely should be a correct alternate response.

Agree on Elvis Costello (I tried Impostors before thinking of Attractions). Great quiz regardless. I would certainly love to see a sequel.

Cartophiliac is correct. There is no "the" in Edie Brickell and New Bohemians. Adrian is correct about Hootie and the Blowfish.

We could have a whole quiz about ska-punk backing bands. My favorite was one my friend suggested: Johnny No-Name and The So-And-Sos.

@bkb24 I think Echo was a drum machine. Ian McCulloch was never Echo. @chrispaz - Edie Brickell & the NBs did quite well in UK for one album & I saw them in London. Edie later married Paul Simon.

For the sequel - Otis Day and the Knights. Once a fictional band from Animal House, they are now a real band and still touring, thirty years later...

There are probably enough backing bands out there to fuel a second quiz. How about Ronnie Spector and the Ronnettes or Kenny Rogers and the First Edition?

Too many are missing. Where are George Thurgood and the Destroyers, Afrika Bambaataa and the Soul Sonic Force, Hootie and the Blowfish, Heavy D and the Boyz, Lil' Jon and the East Side Boyz, Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, Katrina and the Waves, Dick Dale and his Del-Tones?

Gah. For some reason I was convinced it was 'family Sloane.' Then again, I still did fairly badly, so it wouldn't have mattered (:
