What about Canberra? Yes it is the capital of Australia, but it is also the capital of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) which is formally the 8th state/territory in the country...

If you're from Australia there is no excuse not to get them all.

Very surprised at the lack of Canberra.

So basically the biggest city in the state = the capital. Every state/country/territory should do that. It would do wonders for my Sporcle geography scores.

Why not make it a little more fun and add the capitals of the Australian Antarctic Territory and Christmas Island and all those. Then it would really be challenging.

I'm happy that I managed to get them all despite not being Australian myself. Thanks to Oz for making all your state capitals major cities--unlike here in the US, where several of our capitals are obscure towns you'd never be able to guess ;-)

Glad to see from the comments that Canberra was added on later...I was a bit disturbed that the national capital had the lowest percentage right.

I have never been to Australia and haven't studied its geography. Still got 4/8 which is ok I guess.

@Sneuticles: Well, yes, otherwise you'd just have to name the big cities in Australia. All the regional capital quizes are set up this way (U.S. State Capitals, Canadian Provincial/Territorial Capitals, etc.), so this is just consistent.

Look, those Australians know the right way to go: just make the largest city capital. A lot easier than the US state capitals.

This really just became a test of how quickly I could type the cities in Australia I know, I knew the answers, but had very little clue as to which city was in which territory and yet I gott 8/8 so maybe less time needed.

@jack: albany was and is an historic city. the albany plan of union was one of the many steps in the american revolution. stuff like that is, in a lot of ways, more important than size. look up the history behind some of these cities and you'll know why theyre capitals.

I agree with Isaac. Albany isn't obscure at all and is probably one of the more well-known state capitals. But Jefferson City, MO? Frankfort, KY?

I would venture to say the difficulty in Albany is that to a non-American, the logical capital for the state of New York would be the same-named city which is the biggest in the nation.

This was almost too easy. I think there should be a trick question in there or something, just to throw off the scent. For instance, you should have to name the capitals of Christmas Island, Norfolk Island, the Cocos Islands, etc. That would at least make this a bit more challenging.

6/8, not bad considering I don't know much about the country at all. I had "Barrow" in my head for the Northern one. All those who know their old football clubs will know why I got Barrow and Darwen mixed up!

Did anyone notice that they're all on the very edge of Australia, on the coastline? What the hell is up with that? Very eerie.

@Moviedyamic... it's quite simple. That's where everyone lives here. Pretty much everywhere outside the coastline of Aus is desert, bushland, and grassland for farming. A lot of unliveable areas. So there are only very few larger cities not located on the coastline.

That was a lot easier than I thought it would be (even though I didn't get them all..). I still would love to see a New Zealand territories quiz though. Pleeeeaaasse? I love New Zealand.

I managed to get 5. Perth and Brisbane I recognized, Hobart I never heard of before. I've developed this obsession with knowing as much about Australia as possible lately. Well, now I know all the states/territories and their capital cities. Now, if I meet a nice Australian girl, I can wow her with my wordly knowledge by reciting all of these. :)
