Seeing as Paul Robeson is not known as an athlete and is not even portrayed athletically on his stamp, that would open the floodgates for several other athletes who are far better known for other fields, such as John Wayne or Gerald Ford.

Not an easy quiz considering 90% of these athletes died before my time

@Booger - added; @JohnJF - good point, removed. We hope these can avoid a Stamp-ede and that folks will have this quiz licked.

I think there's something wrong with the coding on this quiz. I got Babe Ruth right and that's what showed up while doing the quiz, but when I checked the results, it showed that I didn't get Ruth, but I did get Knute Rockne, which I have no idea who that is.

And I also just noticed it gave me George Sisler in the results when I didn't guess him, but I did guess Jackie Robinson and I didn't get credit for that one.

Three minutes in before I remembered that you had to be dead to get on a stamp in the U.S.

I typed in DiMaggio three times to make sure I was spelling it right. Amazing that he's never made it onto a stamp.

DiMaggio died in 1999 if i remember correctly, so it might not have been ten years yet...

It's kind of astonishing that there aren't any basketball players at all on stamps--is the sport too young to have great players who died before the year 2000?

Made some useless entries till it hit me what the qualifications are for being on a stamp. Too bad to give'em this one great honour that they'll never be around to see

@Tahnan: All of the giants of the sport are either alive or died in the past ten years. You could make a case for someone like Pete Maravich, but I imagine the USPS wants to reserve the honor of being the first basketball player on a stamp to someone who is indisputably central to the history of the game. My guess is that they go with Wilt Chamberlain, who died in 1999.

Oh god it was a long way into the quiz until i read the part that says you have to be dead to be on a stamp in the U.S. all the while shouting 'how could they not have put Tiger Woods on a stamp yet?!'.

First name I tried was Jordan. He's not on a stamp so I figure the quiz isn't worth taking.

now we can see how people truly do on this quiz, seeing as these answers can't be easily looked up on google like all the other quizzes...

Mr. Nagurski, a native of Minnesota, spelled his first name "Bronko", I believe, not as the Denver football team does (Bronco).

Robby Thompson could be a bonus answer. If memory serves correct his 1951 HR was honored with a stamp when the USPS did their celebrate the century series at the end of the 20th century. 16 events/peoples from each decade of the century were honored with stamps. Not sure if Thompson's face was on the stamp or not, but if so he would be one of only a handful of living people to be featured on a stamp, The soldiers raising the flag at Iwo Jima I think were the first, not sure if there have been others.

Interesting quiz, though I wonder why Eddie Eagan is given as "Boxer, bobsledder", but Thorpe and Zaharias are only given as "Track & field". Still, that's a small gripe- 'twas a good quiz. I'm very surprised Amos Alonzo Stagg has never been on a stamp- he was in the inaugural classes of both the College Football and Pro Basketball Halls of Fame.

The same rule about being dead applies in the UK too (except for royalty) I think the only person who bypassed the rule is Roger Taylor from Queen, who was lurking in the background on drums behind Freddie Mercury in 'that' pose.

lol. granted that I'm not much into sports, and that a coach doesn't do any sport and that Baseball isn't really a sport at all: I have not heard a single one of those names before... About that note "With the sole exception of U.S. Presidents, a person must be dead for ten years before being featured on a U.S. postage stamp.": Is that for real? This doesn't make any sense at all (Ok, it's American ...)

Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman and Paul Robesman are the bonus also Helene Madison, a swimmer, was left off the list for some reason.

Tough quiz. I got 19 on first try but I also took a while to figure out that you have to be dead to be on a stamp - is it really 10 years dead? I tried Dimaggio a couple of times too. I confess that I've never heard of the bottom 10.

@America It's because you have to dead at least 10 years to make a stamp and all of the famous basketballs stars are still alive or have died only recently. Chamberlain, who died 10 years ago, might end up being the first.

I think you are missing Jesse Owens from 1990. I tried entering his name a million times and was shocked that it didn't come up. He definitely has a stamp.

Doesn't really matter, since only last names are needed, but it's Bronko Nagurski.
