Yes, gopaladins, there are more assassinations than the ones on this list. Listing all the American presidents that got assassinated/attempted just pads the answers because everyone knows those. The one I expected and didn't see was Leon Trotsky.

It's a bit mean to require the "Jr" for "Martin Luther King"! I thought my history had gone wonky for a minute there...

They missed a few presidents, William Mckinley, how can you put an attempted murder of a U.S. president and not one who actually was murdered?

@Kevin - Rabin was Prime Minister of Israel assassinated for his non-hardline approach to the Palestinian situation; Marat was a significant figure in the French Revolution who was stabbed in his bath.

I'm okay with most of this list. If there's any dispute in my mind, it's with Rasputin, who died at the hands of a lot of people. And yeah, this could be expanded to double or triple the size.

@Brandon: Sirhan Sirhan is still alive and was never shot. Perhaps you are thinking of Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated John F. Kennedy? Oswald was then shot by Jack Ruby. As a side note, Sirhan Sirhan assassinated Robert F. Kennedy, who was JFK's brother.

not an exhaustive list!!! Also, just one person was responsible for killing Rasputin? Doesn't the myth go that he was poisoned, stabbed, thrown in a river then shot a few times or some crazy nonsense like that?

i agree with librería...doesn't the term "assassination" typically refer to a political figure? lennon's death was obviously a tragic murder, but i don't know that i would classify it as an assassination.

@Brian: Yeah, true, Gandhi's real name was Mohandas K. Gandhi (not sure of the middle name). Mahatma is just a title given to him. James Garfield's assassin should most definitely be on here. It's truly a rare case when someone recognizes Charles Guiteau, let alone knows his background (a sham of a lawyer, and by nature an obsessive and insane man).

To make my point, here is the definition of assassinate 1 : to injure or destroy unexpectedly and treacherously 2 : to murder (a usually prominent person) by sudden or secret attack often for political reasons both of these apply to John Lennon. He was a political figure in the sixties. Many people looked to him with their growing anti-war feelings. He may have not been the president, but he was in the news numerous times for protesting the war and trying to get peace... And since the sixties were filled with political stress over the war and the want for world peace, I would have to say he was a political figure. :)

First off, I love the fact that the quiz accepts "II" as JP's last name. On the Lennon thing, I agree with the non-assassination side. If you look at the other people on the list, they are people who were killed either for their politics or by people trying to make a political point. Despite the fact that he was an activist prior to his death, I don't see how Lennon fits either category. It's essentially expanding the definition to anyone who has a) ever been killed and b) ever expressed a political opinion.

Oh my God. I jokingly typed in "Kennedy" and it showed up. I was freaked out! I was like, "When did they catch him?!" But then it was Robert Kennedy. I wonder if we'll ever know who took out JFK.

Assassination doesn't necessarily refer to the murder of a politician, just a public figure. This quiz begs for a sequel - there's so many more! On a different note, I think it's odd that "pope john paul" didn't work for me, but "john paul" did. I would understand if neither worked since it was actually Pope John Paul II, but if you accept one, you should accept the other.

TheWalrus, Lennon was killed in 1980, well after his anti-war activities and when he was focused on getting his career back on track rathr than staging a 'sleep-in'. As for your definitions of assassination, three quarters of all murders could be considered assassinations then. I personally associate assassination with prominent political figures or social activists who are killed for their policies/stances on issues.

Bit ticked about the requirement of the "al" in Sadat's name. I typed his name minus the "al" and didn't get credit.
