	@The Arbiter: Taiwan is officially called the Republic of China; the country that is usually called just "China" is, officially, the People's Republic of China. Taiwan as a separate country came about after the Communists won the Civil War but didn't take Taiwan. Both countries claim to be the legitimate government of the whole of China. Wikipedia has lots of information.

	Taiwan is controlled by the GuoMingDang (Nationalist Party) who exiled to Taiwan after losing the civil war when Chairman Mao proclaimed the foundation of the People's Republic of China on 1st October 1949. Taiwan is known as the Republic of China, and while the Government of the People's Republic still declares that it is not independent so they reached a compromise (See Dem Rep of the Congo & Rep of the Congo). The GuoMingDang have not attempted to regain power in China.

	I was wondering that too. It messes me up because I was used to typing 'kazakhstankyrgyzstanturkmenistantajikistanuzbekistanafghanistanpakistan', then I find out none of the stans past kyrgyz count. x_x

	@WarioBro: It's essentially a consent thing. The military dictatorship in Burma/Myanmar changed the name of the country but, since the people never chose that government, many people feel that they have no right to change the country's name. That, and the name `Burma' is still used by most people within the country. Similarly, Cambodia was known as Kampuchea during the dictatorship of Pol Pot and reverted to its former name of Cambodia after the withdrawal of Vietnamese troops, who had invaded to prevent the Khmer Rouge attacking Vietnam. Again, the name change from Cambodia to Kampuchea was not made with the people's consent; the reversion to Cambodia was by a democratic government. So, Sporcle is accepting the new and old names for Burma/Myanmar but not the illegitimate former name of Cambodia.

	most alarming: approximately 15% percent of people who take this test either 1) cannot spell afghanistan, 2) do not know it is in asia, or 3) do not know it i exists. alarming!

	This one is pretty excellent. The only suggestions I would make are that Hainan Island should color in with China (looks like a separate country), and Bahrain, Qatar and maybe East Timor could probably use some of those little arrows so you don't overlook them.

	If you type just Kyrgyz it comes up with Kyrgyzstan? Surely if you can spell Kyrgyz you don't need stan to automatically come up. And if that's the norm then why doesn't it happen for Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan or Kazakhstan?

	yes, the island of new guinea is split. papua new guinea occupies the eastern half, and is in oceania, and the western half consists of papua and west papua, which are indonesian provinces. in fact, it is indonesia which is the transcontinental country, not papua new guinea.
