There likely are minerals deposited throughout Antarctica that could be very...enriching.

The first three and the fifth one all make sense, given their geographic locations, but I'm not sure how the hell I got the other three. Guessed them all kind of early in my progression through world powers, too...

It should be noted that both the US and Russia have "maintained their right to make future claims."

fun, random quiz. I got 5/7 just plain guessing. I sort of went through the southern hemisphere saying "okay, what's closest to antarctica?" :)

Amundsen was Norwegian. Their claim is the most obvious of the lot.

I find it interesting that most people have so far found Norway to be random. To me at least Norway is the country associate the most with Antarctic territorial claims, and I think they have a lot in common with each other. The one I didn't get was France. I just didn't see that coming. I think France is the most random of these countries to me. They are either countries in the southern hemisphere or countries that are really north. And France is just sort of there. That caught me off guard

@Scotto263: France actually has a fair amount of territory in that part of the world, comprising the French Southern and Antarctic Lands. It's not that surprising then that they would make a claim for part of Antarctica.

Scotto263:France has a few little inhabited islands near Antartica and they had one of the eight territories of Antarctica:Terre Adélie, discovered in 1840 by Jules Dumont d'Urville France lost sovereignty on that territory in 1959 alongside with the other countries of that quizz, because of Treaty of Antarctica

Don't know why people are saying Norway/UK are random. Being as Amundsen was the first to reach the South Pole in a race with Scott they both seemed pretty obvious to me. France was the one I struggled to get.

Well, I thought Norway was random because I just don't remember learning anything about the discovery of the South Pole. I merely went with those close geographically (Argentina, Chile, Australia, New Zealand) and those known to colonize a lot (UK, France). Without knowing that part of history, one is merely grasping at straws to come up with Norway (though I completely forgot about the Vikings...).

As an aside, why do the US and Russia feel that they have claim to Antarctic territory?
milkmeister
:

@OscilatingGibbon: Apparently, there was a treaty signed called the Antarctic Treaty which prevents territory being claimed in the region. But, those countries who already had a claim to territory were allowed to keep it. So US and Russia, plus a few others have a pending claim which would only be in force if the treaty ended.

@John: No. Great Britain is the large island that comprises the mainland of England, Scotland and Wales. It is not a country and should no more be accepted than `Hokkaido' would be for Japan. (Granted, we compete as Great Britain at the Olympics but that's an anomaly.)

@davidr: Don't we compete at the Olympics as Great Britain and Northern Ireland? Which is just a shortened form of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The UK's claim probably comes from the proximity of the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. The territroy claimed by the UK entirely overlaps the Argentine claim and part of the Chilean claim too. Incidentally all the non-South American claimants recognise each other's territories, which do not overlap

@milkmeister: No, we compete as Great Britain. Northern Irish athletes have the option of competing either for Great Britain or for Ireland.

I think Antarctica itself should be there, either as an answer or as a bonus, as a huge part of it is "unclaimed" and therefore owns (or claims?) itself. Anyone else agree?

@lapper220: This is a quiz of countries that claim territory in Antarctica. Antarctica is not a country and the unclaimed areas are, by definition, not claimed by anyone.

@Davidr, NI athletes being able to compete for either is not the point, they have dual citizenship as a legal right. According to dictionary.com amongst others, GBR is the IOC abbreviation for Great Britain and Northern Ireland, according to other places it's just Great Britain. What is not disputed is that Great Britain is not the same as UK in the context of a geographic/legal entity.

@milkmeister: According to the IOC, GBR is the IOC abbreviation for `Great Britain': http://www.olympic.org/uk/organisation/noc/index_uk.asp?id_assoc=8 . On the other hand, it is the ISO-3166-1 abbreviation for the UK. (Gaaah.)

Finally, proof the US is not imperialistic. Until we discover a drop of oil and rape the landscape and claim penguin liberation.

Feel free to vote me down for being REALLY dumb. I deserve it. I spent a minute thinking Antarctica was the North Pole. Still managed to get four in time. Guess I should try having my morning coffee before doing any quizzes.
