| When IACO was creating 3 letter codes, some groups claimed certain letters. The US Navy, for example, claimed N, so instead of NWR, Newark is EWR, and instead of NOR, Norfolk is ORF. The Canadian government claimed Y, being the last unclaimed letter, and relatively unused, so they could remain consistent. So Pearson in Toronto is YYZ, Montreal is YUL, Vancouver is YVR, Calgary is YYC etc etc...well except Bathurst New Brunswick, which is ZBF...dont ask me why on that one. |
