Great quiz - difficult, but a relatively true test of a person's vocabulary and word association abilities.

Not a big fan of this one...good concept, but it really didn't fit the Sporcle format

@XYlophonetreeZ, matt: I've heard "pickled" as a synonym for drunk. It may be worth noting that it's not used by a person intending to get drunk -- it's used by someone commenting derogatorily on someone else.

"Jam Up" had me totally bemused. Perhaps "Block" would be better. And "Make vocal music" rather than "Warble". I stuggled with "Hurting" as the resulting word didn't quite fit. Maybe "Symptom of injury"? Great quiz though - it had me scratching my head.

Looooooove this one. Great idea. I got 12, but I think I'd do better if it wasn't 1:30 in the morning.

I also think picked/pickled was a little strange... it/lit would be much better.

Some of those clues were rather vague and better synonyms could have been chosen. I've never heard of pickled either.

Pickled is quite a common euphemism for drunk over here (UK, East Coast)....I managed to get that one, but missed a few of the more 'obvious' ones...good quiz.

Pickled is clearly uk-centric .... and a good hint for what to do this weekend

Interesting, but some of the clues have part-of-speech problems: "hurting" isn't a good clue for "pain", and there's some inconsistency about verbs.

in reference to the tartan pattern, i have never heard the answer used in reference to the pattern before, only in reference to the finished material, or to a large rectangular piece of material worn wrapped over the shoulder, in old highland style.

Coming from Boston, I tried all variations of the the word "good" for wicked. I always forget that it has negative context, too.

You can use practically any word in the past tense to mean drunk. I may never have actually said "pickled" but I can still conceive of it being said.

What's the problem with pickled? That's what my mother used to call someone who was drunk. Perhaps it is a little old-fashioned for the typical sporcle audience?

i think there's an interesting question about what a unit of language actually is or means. initially i was thinking in terms of letters, before moving onto words. You could also argue that syllables are the units of language as one of the main reasons apes can't speak is because they can only form one syllable noises (so can't join them together like humans to form multuiple syllable words) and therefore language is basically impossible for them. just a point of interest really.

I'm not in the UK, and I've heard pickled for drunk. I suspect that Joe Pearson has hit on something - familiarity with pickled may be more related to age than geography.

What tcalleen Said. I think so too - pickled is the sort of word my mum would use but I wouldn't. So, I recognise the word but I'm not sure how many of my contemporaries will have heard of it. Great idea for a quiz btw!

Loved this quiz! It's rare that I do better than average on a quiz so to get 17 was awesome. Of course, as soon as the answers popped up I was amazed at how dumb I was not to get the 3 I missed. I agree with the idea that 'pickled' is an older term, I've only heard it from older relatives and in books.

@Soluie: I'm also from Boston. "Wicked" doesn't mean "good" to New Englanders, it means "very" or "really." Think of how it's used: "That's wicked funny." Nobody in New England really says "Oh that's wicked." That's more of a British thing.

Wouldn't "It/Lit" work for "chosen -> drunk"?

Anybody else waste the first couple minutes just looking at the clues on the left, forgetting there were clues for the post "L" word? Also, how does "it" fit with "chosen"?

@MattJ: I can just about see what you mean, as in "you're it", meaning "you're chosen". It's quite tenuous though.

@ milkmeister: I wasn't suggesting that "It/Lit" should be accepted, I was just saying that it would work. And, yeah, that was my thought with "Did they make the choice yet?" "Yeah, you're it."
