I like these quizzes, there harder because you don't have a map in front of you, you have to draw your answers from memory

Would be interested to see a "Top twenty-five longest country names" quiz or something to that effect come up. 26/31 on this, though I really should have gotten 29.

the only way i've been able to tackle quizzes like this is to just go in geographical order quickly musing over the countries names from Canada down and then all to the west. It's pretty quick and works a lot; there, that's my little tip.

I tend to do the same thing, although I started in SA and worked up.

As usual with these geography ones, Africa and Central America are my undoing. Still, these are a lot of fun.

Got 'em all...any country with a six-letter name must be the lair of the devil. Especially Canada.

I too embarrassingly missed France =S even though France is our next door neighbour, I even thought of it a couple of times in my quick world map scanning, but being only one syllable I think it seems shorter than it is. Seems like 5 letters somehow. I'm still embarrassed about that though!

I almost missed Russia too. Thought of it with like 30 seconds left. Ended up missing 4. 2 that I really had no business missing (Turkey and Kuwait). These quizzes are fantastic. I also like that theyre not in alphabetical order because sometimes theyre easier that way.

I love these quizzes! I always seem to get the obscure ones (Tuvalu) and forget some obvious ones (Brazil....DOH!). 7 letters next? :)

Haha, Brazil was the big glaring one that I missed. Kept passing over it when I mentally pictured SA, but got Guyana, for some reason. Also, went through a lot of red-herring 7-lettered countries, making me think another installation of this quiz would be quite the long list!

When doing the five letter quiz, I tried many of these countries only to realize they are 6 letters, not 5. Also missed France while getting Tuvalu.

Why do people feel compelled to write down the score they got, as though other people are interested?

I got Tuvalu as well but also missed Canada and did miss Panama simply because I thought they had more than six letters. 10 secs to go I put Canada in and realised my mistake. Also missed Israel.

Since the scandal that was Trinidad and Tobago appearing in the Natural Gases quiz, I have made it a point to always guess them in geography quizzes. With the seconds rolling down, they were worth a shot...

@Kevin: I submitted a quiz of the 27 longest country names a few weeks ago — I hope it will be published soon. (It's 27 because there are four countries tied in 23rd place, then two at =28th and seven at =30th, so there weren't any round numbers available.) The quiz uses the long names of the countries (e.g., Grand Duchy of Luxembourg) but you can enter the normal short names that are used in all Sporcle quizzes (e.g., Luxembourg).

Oh. Well, definitely want to say thanks for letting me know, because I was actually going to go through the process of putting one together. Good to know that would have been a waste of time. The way you did it is going to be tough, since Sporcle has conditioned me and others to know the conventional names, but I guess that's the only way to do it fairly.

I don't think you should have the formal names on a longest names quiz. Too many countries have "The People's Republic of" or similiar words that you never hear that would make the quiz too difficult. If you had china on the five letter list, you shouldn't have The People's Republic of China on the other game.

I agree with cocky, mostly. I think the longest country names quiz should be based on the commonly used names for the countries, but I think it would be okay -- and even interesting -- to include the formal names parenthetically (with the list selected based on the short names). e.g.: (The People's Republic of) China (which would not be included in the longest country name quiz using this criterion, as its name is only five letters long).
