One more thing: These are all the legit one-word four-letters or less top 5 hits of the Hot 100 era I could find. I know there were a lot more 4-letter titles, but they didn't make the Billboard's top 5. I'd love to do a similar quiz for UK hits, but haven't got a complete data base - the data stops 20 years ago!

Shakespeare's sister lol or Bananarama of the 90's...like when Duran Duran became Arcadia for like 15 minutes...just felt like musing over that madness for the sake of it.

@Supernuke: Iris was a HUGE #1 airplay hit, but at the time Billboard only charted songs released as singles. Billboard changed the rules about 3 weeks too late for Iris to qualify.

lol when you put all these words together it makes a pretty (albeit totally grammatically incorrect) funny run on sentence.

First, really interesting quiz. Second, I missed a few I shouldn't have, but also randomly guessed words ("When", "Gone", others) that ended up being correct. Third, I'm disappointed "Rio" only hit #14 in the US- I love me some old-school Duran Duran. Fourth and finally, while it's a great song, I don't think Lisa Loeb's "Stay" should really be up there, since it's called "Stay (I Missed You)".

@kicking: 1) thanks 2) good thinking 3) I understand. I was a Big Duran fan back in tha day 4) It qualifies twice anyhow, but for the purpose of this quiz, I kept to main titles.

Pretty confusing. On the front page it specifically says four letter songs. Didn't realize until I was done taking the quiz that it says four letters or less on the actual quiz page. BOOOOOOOO.

@jjs91: Iris by the GGD was released when the Billboard Hot 100 didn't allow songs without physical single releases to chart. That's why songs like that, "Torn" by Natalie Imbruglia and "Don't Speak" by No Doubt didn't chart high even though they were massive airplay hits. (That rule was removed some years ago, but with digital sales so strong now it doesn't come into play now anyway)

@pr: I thought you were right and I missed O.P.P. due to the punctuation, but it peaked at #6, so Hip-hop hurray for me! . . . . . @sammyhain: Sorry about that. I've also sent in a 5-letter song list which is more strict. Pays to read the instructions first. . . . . . @jjs91: "Wait" peaked at eight and if I'm Lion I'm dyin. . . . . @Wakka: I could do a whole quiz theme on song titles that are times, but 3am didn't qualify here because of the number. . . . . @malonetd & @Cheese_Ed: What are you guys doing up so early? ;-) Good to see other Four Word Film Reviews here (www.fwfr.com).

Given that they missed only the Hot 100 on a technicality (and were #1 airplay hits) I think both "Iris" (Goo Goo Dolls,1998) and "Torn" (Natalie Imbruglia, 1998) should be bonus answers. So if you got either of those two, give yourself bonus points.

@rockgolf - Try here for UK stats: http://www.everyhit.com/index.html It seems to inlove a bit of data-wading (I don't know the correct term) but it seems to have what you said was missing in an earlier post. If you need an assistant data-wader, let me know.

should just leave off the 2 and 3 letter ones - when you are guessing its easier to focus on 4-letter guesses...plus 61 is a lot...you could have just done one with 2s and 3s and expand beyond top 5..good stuff though

I can't believe I typed eight four-letter Matchbox Twenty songs and not the one that's the answer. Also, I thought of "Ben" and "Bad" at the start of the quiz, while I was under the impression the answers were all four letters exactly, not four letters or fewer (correct grammar would be nice, Sporcle!) then forgot all about them later on.
