That did not go well... for me, that is.
Jan 18th, 2009 at 20:33 GMT
i didn't watch many films this year. I think 9 out of 20 shows that
Jan 18th, 2009 at 20:39 GMT
There are at least 5 bonus answers between 103 mil and 101 mil. May be more
Jan 18th, 2009 at 20:42 GMT
I got 2 by myself. I haven't seen almost any of these.
Jan 18th, 2009 at 20:50 GMT
I got 1. My roommate got the other 19. It was ridiculous. He almost got them in order. Honestly, I'm scared. Good quiz.
Jan 18th, 2009 at 20:58 GMT
16/20, good one for me. Though seeing Twilight so high up makes me want to weep for humanity.
Jan 18th, 2009 at 21:07 GMT
i think putting the "!" on mama mia is a little much. i didn't get it because i didn't put the exclamation at the end of it
Jan 18th, 2009 at 21:17 GMT
Yep, the year that saw the second highest grossing movie of all time. Incredible. Also nice to see "Benjamin Button" up there as a bonus answer.
Jan 18th, 2009 at 21:39 GMT
I got #1 and the two released over the holidays (probably because they were so recent). I'm not really a movie watching girl but that was pathetic.
Jan 18th, 2009 at 21:49 GMT
I think it should be by world box office. not just what it earned in the US
Jan 18th, 2009 at 21:55 GMT
bedtime stories is A bonus answer
Jan 18th, 2009 at 22:00 GMT
The fact that Twilight is on the list makes me sick...
Jan 18th, 2009 at 22:15 GMT
@Brandon: Exclamation marks are ignored in most Sporcle quizzes, including this one. You didn't get `Mamma Mia!' because you spelt `Mamma' wrongly, though `Mama' is now accepted.
Jan 18th, 2009 at 22:26 GMT
@MovieDynamic: `Highest grossing of all time' is a completely bogus statistic because it doesn't take inflation into account. If a movie released in 1958 had been watched by as many people as watched the #1 grossing movie of 2008, it would have only grossed about $72,000,000. Even a 1998 film watched by that many people would have only grossed about $400,000,000.
Jan 18th, 2009 at 22:50 GMT
I know, I know. Just sayin, cause it is quite an achievement.
Jan 18th, 2009 at 22:53 GMT
I think that Marley & Me should count, that is how it's listed on IMDB and movie listing sites.
Jan 18th, 2009 at 22:59 GMT
What an awful list, quality wise. 3, maybe 4, movies worth seeing.
Jan 18th, 2009 at 23:36 GMT
@Kevin: there are 5 bonus answers
Jan 18th, 2009 at 23:39 GMT
This quiz should have waited until some of the 2008 movies are done. Benjamin Button is still out. Or do they end the count at the year?
Jan 18th, 2009 at 23:47 GMT
I think we can conclude that Sporcle users don't have any time left to watch movies.
Jan 19th, 2009 at 03:12 GMT
@davidr: There are many factors that skew statistics besides inflation. For example, all movies released before 1950 had stronger attendances because television had yet to be invented. The admissions were cheaper, but it allowed for more people to be able to afford to go to the movies as a cheap form of entertainment. People use the Internet now to download movies illegally instead of watching in the theaters. Many people don't bother going to the theaters anymore because they just wait to rent the DVD. Gas was at a record high with the US average at over 4 dollars a gallon last summer. The economy was the worst its been since The Great Depression. Yet TDK grossed 531 million domestically despite all this. So don't act like it wasn't an impressive feat.
Jan 19th, 2009 at 03:58 GMT
Another one who didn't do very well here. And I missed at least 2 very obvious ones (Indiana Jones, and the James Bond film).
Jan 19th, 2009 at 07:19 GMT
I am missing 'Juno'. It is a movie from 2007 but it grossed 112 million in 2008.
Jan 19th, 2009 at 10:35 GMT
I'm pretty sure that the top grossing list still takes into account inflation.
Jan 19th, 2009 at 13:34 GMT
@WestWingerjd: The figures that are usually quoted don't take inflation into account. If the movie industry wanted to give a genuine comparison, they wouldn't even need to adjust for inflation: they could just quote the total number of tickets sold, instead of their total price. If you do take inflation into account, the top ten list (US/Canadian box office only) is Gone with the Wind, Star Wars, The Sound of Music, E.T., Titanic, Jaws, Doctor Zhivago, The Exorcist, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Jan 19th, 2009 at 18:04 GMT
awful. cant believe i missed #'s 4, 5, 6 :(
Jan 19th, 2009 at 22:13 GMT
I got four. How have I never heard of this "Iron Man" if it's the second best selling film of the year? I know I haven't exactly been living in the cinema, but still. (I missed the one film i DID see, Indiana Jones.)
Jan 19th, 2009 at 22:19 GMT
DavidR - When is the "all-time top-grossing (inflation adjusted)" quiz coming..? We've got this one, DVDs in 2007 and "Top 20 in the 90s" but no WORLDWIDE GROSSES; no ALL-TIME lists (inflation-adjusted or otherwise)... High time for any and all those. :o)
Feb 8th, 2009 at 20:13 GMT
forgot beverly hills chihuahua grossed 117 mil
Feb 26th, 2009 at 09:02 GMT
How come I typed in "Bedtime Stories" and it appeared?
May 19th, 2009 at 00:31 GMT
Seeing Twilight on here also made me wanna weap. It was terrible. A got them all plus two of the bonus answers so I'm pleased. lol
Jun 11th, 2011 at 03:51 GMT
Why isn't Slumdog Millionaire on this list? It was the #19 grossing movie of 2008 according to IMDB. I had to check because I was so confused as to why the movie that won Best Picture in 2008 wasn't one of the top grossing films.
Aug 10th, 2011 at 05:30 GMT
For some reason you dont have Gran Torino on here. You skip over it for some reason. It made 148 Million and is on the Box Office Mojo site you reference as a source as being the 12th highest grossing film of the year 2008
Aug 26th, 2011 at 00:47 GMT
I was thinking the same thing about Gran Torino and Slumdog. Other than that, decent one. 3/5.
Mar 21st, 2012 at 19:44 GMT
Wow. I guess I didn't hit the theatre too often that year. I saw four of these but only guessed the most obvious one.
