Thanks to Asterix, which I read when I was a kid, and to the folks who translated it into English.

I don't know if it is impressive or shameful that 99.9 percent of quiz takers knew of Paris... I mean who would miss that?

I sent a quiz similar to this about French cities, but I guess Sporcle already had this one planned? Good quiz otherwise.

As everyones said before, Ligue 1 was my main resource. Football deserves an award for singlehandedly boosting the geographical knowledge of a sizable portion of the world's citizens.

Got 13. Quite pleaed with that, thought I'd do worse. Though being a football fan Ligue 1 helped a lot.

Got 19, I missed Nîmes. I would not have thought it was among the 20 more populous cities in my country. By the way, Toulouse and Paris are a little bit misplaced ! Great quiz, by the way :)

Contrary to common beliefs of the day, the French have not alwayts been known for surrendering and relying on the U.S. for support, that was judt from WWI on. France was the mightiest nation in the world from 1600s to 1790, much longer than the U.S.'s reign from 1945-2009. Besides those glorious years, France has been around since 843. Compare 2000 years of history to 233.

By my count, there are 7 one-syllable cities on this list. For those of you whose work day is as slow as mine, can you think of any large one-syllable U.S. cities? The only ones that come to mind right now are Flint and Nome, but there's got to be something bigger.

That's a great question, Russell. Unbelievably, I think it's Orange, Calif., the 177th largest city in the U.S. -- but some would even dispute whether "Orange" is one syllable or two. In which case it would have to be Flint, at #216.

Orange is surely two syllables. Also, I was rather surprised by Angers being on the list. Missed that and Le Havre.
