| Maybe another quiz can look into whether any of these locations are also at risk for tsunamis. In Japan the speculation is that the 40-year old Fukushima Daiichi plant survived the 9.0 magnitude earthquake quite well only to have its cooling capabilities damaged by the subsequent tsunami. It was designed to withstand a peak ground acceleration of 0.18 g (1.74 m/s2), but apparently survived the Sendai earthquake, which at the epicenter was 0.35 g (3.43 m/s2). The Fukushima Daiichi plant was reportedly designed to withstand a 5.7 m tsunami. It will be interesting to see what the forthcoming investigation reveals. |
