I find it hard to believe that someone with the means to move elsewhere chooses to live in Detroit.

@Rooster: These are metro areas, not cities. The Detroit metro area is home to many communities that rank among the highest-income places in the United States. In fact the median family income of Beverly Hills, Michigan, at $102,223, is nearly as high as the better known Beverly Hills, California ($110,040).

The idea that San Jose and San Francisco are part of different metro areas is debatable at best. San Jose is pretty explicitly a suburb of San Francisco.
