	Had to do the math. In 186 there were 250,787 free blacks in the slave states and 226,823 in the free states.

	The overwhelming majority of blacks were in the south, so most of the free ones were too. In the early days of slavery, it was easier to be granted manumission or to buy one's freedom, so communities of free blacks arose. People tend to stay where they're used to and where their relatives are - some free blacks were even slaveholders, buying their relatives to give them freedom or to keep them from being sold away (in the states that prohibited manumission).

	When I saw the data, I thought people might find it interesting. Manumission must have been illegal in South Carolina and Georgia, as they both had huge slave populations but minuscule free black populations.

	On top of that, some slaves were defacto free, in places where it was easy to escape, the owners had to treat them well to keep them from doing so, and would let them live on theirown.
