Some of them are countries the US is at war with or where they participate in peace operations; others are countries where the US have military bases because they are strategic points to that part of the world. But I'm surprised to see so many in some countries like #4 or #13. Why's that?

#4 is largely due to old post-war commitments as well as a large military infrastructure in place which makes it an ideal stop-over base for operations in the Middle East (as well as a political reassurance to EU allies against Russia). #13 is due to NATO HQ.

Also, I believe much of the British army is also located in Germany, probably for the reason that there are so many US troops there!

Wouldn't expect to type in the US, though it might seem obvious. There is at least one large US military base in Germany, probably dating back to the 1940s. Japan probably has a lot of American troops for the same reason.

The European/Japanese deployments are mainly related to the Cold War. South Korea has them because of the threat from North Korea. Bahrain has been a hub for the US military in the Middle East for a long time. It's one of the friendliest among the Middle Eastern countries and least likely to leak technology to terrorists. Djibouti is another hub because of its location near Yemen, which itself cannot be trusted (to carry out intelligence against Al Qaeda). France has a large part of its Foreign Legion also stationed in Djibouti.

A friend of a friend was just deployed to Kuwait. Why is that not on the list? Is that not considered active duty, and if so, why not?

Please accept "usa"...some of us type faster than the Sporcle keystroke timer. Also, Cuba? Guantanamo Bay was leased last time I checked, making it part of Cuba...and apparently there are 10 thousand sailors and marines there.

Too bad the NATO base in Iceland closed in 2006, I was going to be so proud of getting that one!

Hard to believe Canada did not make the list. Also, based on the title of the quiz, Kuwait, UAE, Kyrgyzstan, and Qatar would have to be on the list. All have well over 1,000 Americans stationed there in support of OIF & OEF.

flixuk, your data is absolutely accurate . . . but your source is four years old (2007). In the present world the countries mentioned by Scuba_Steve would be on the quiz. And Guantanamo will always be a grey area, it would be nice as a bonus.

Guantanamo Bay is actually a part of Cuba, the US is leasing the land.

Re the comments above from Endasil and British - Guantanamo IS part of Cuba both geographically and the Cuban state retains ultimate sovereignity in accordance with the lease agreement of 1903. By the terms of the latter, the US has complete control over the area for the purposes of its use as a coaling and naval station.
