Surprising that there is Dominican Republic but no Mexico. Romania is so high due to similar languages and their presence in the EU. The rest a mixture of those with borders, rich Northern European nations in search of sun (UK, Germany) and Spanish-speaking South American nations. Plus China of course, which must feature on nearly all lists of this type.

Very tiny correction - please capitalise 'R' in Dominican Republic. Other than that good quiz.

Most of these quizzes turn into a typing contest. Anyone else agree?

Nice quiz, but please clean it up with the aforementioned capital R and use of comma consistently to separate thousands from hundreds.

No they are not. There is a large Roma (Gypsy) population in Spain but they have been in Spain for centuries. The Romanian population is a more recent wave of immigration from the European Unions recent eastward expansion with most Romanians coming to Spain for better paying jobs. Most came to Spain because of less strict immigration policies at the time.compared to say, the UK or Germany. Not due to a related language.. although they are both based off of Latin, Romanian is so far from Spanish it is impossible to read or understand. I speak Spanish fluently and can hardly pick words out of Romanian. It would be like English and German speakers being able to.communicate despite being both Germanic languages.

The awkward moment it turns into a 'Name the countries of South America' quiz about halfway through.

I know I'm an idiot when I run out of countries, and then try Cape Verde out of desperation, because it has a Spanish name. Oh dear. What you have done to me Sporcle...

Wikipedia says Romanians are "attracted by the higher wages" and the common "latin identity [found in] the linguistic similarities between Romanian and Spanish."

Funny how the Philippines makes it on so many other of these types of quizzes - no matter how obscure the country - but doesn't make the list for the country that ruled over it for 300 years.

My family in Spain would call those Romanians "gitanos" and it's not nice.

Mexico fooled me too. You would think that nationals a country with a large population, with high violent crime rates from drug cartels and poor labor laws would consider emigrating to a country that 1) speaks the same language as them and 2) ruled over them for 300 years.

Please forgive my ignorance, but can anyone enlighten me as to why many Brazilians are immigrating to Spain? I understand the other Latin American countries, since they are Spanish-speaking and were part of the Spanish Empire, but Brazil is Portuguese-speaking. Please correct me if I'm mistaken/if I'm missing something glaringly obvious. Thank you!

Hard to believe so many Romanian nationals live in Spain. I guess Spain doesn't get a whole lot of sunlight.

yes, there are a lot of romanians in spain, most of them are called "gitanos" because they are gipsy-romanians, these ones live in worst conditions and find harder to adapt. I am quite surprised about brazil, I haven't never met one, here, in Spain.
