| This may be nit picking, but John Tyler was not actually a member of the Whig Party. The Whigs wanted a regional balance to their ticket in 1844, but they couldn't find a Southerner from within their own party, so they nominated Tyler, who they believed to be in step with their party's views. When Tyler sought to run for President in 1848, he sought the Democratic Party nomination, not the Whig's. |
