When you say "states north of any part of Canada", I presume you mean states whose northernmost point is north of the southernmost point in the Dominion of Canada.
Somewhere I've seen a list of the northernmost, southernmost, etc. longitudes and latitudes of each state, I thought in The Statistical Abstract of the U.S. However, not finding such a table easily at the on-line version of the Abstract, I Googled more generally, and found that someone has been studying this question exhaustively and for some length of time (but still welcomes corrections and clarifications). He also comes up with 27 states, and gives very extensive documentation (including personal correspondence with state geographers) and computation here: http://barelybad.com/north_of_canada_map.htm He (or she) also lists those states entirely north of Canada, i.e. those whose southernmost point is north of Canada's. The southernmost point of Canada, according to this site is 41 deg 40' 53" north of the Equator, on Middle Island, Ontario. ("Forty-one forty or fight?") |
