You need to accept a lot more answers. Examples: Lincoln assassination, World War I, Black Thursday, attack on Pearl Harbor, etc. Also, it's 9/11, not 9.

That's because Sporcle doesn't read a slash the way it should. Enter the answer as "9|11" and it should work (the straight line symbol located above the backslash).

The accepted answers are incredibly limited. You can say so many things to describe the same event for that year - like American Revolution for 1776.
