	@adamnvillani: good suggestion; that should work now. @chriskotx: The Ottoman Empire sent athletes in 1908 and 1912, but it was called "Turkey." Perhaps I'll make it a bonus. Austria and Hungary fielded separate teams, as far as I can tell. Korea was controlled by Japan from 1910 to 1945; South Korea sent its first team in 1948.

	I expected Sweden-Norway to be there. But apparently that would be incorrect. In 1900 one swede participated (under Swedish flag) while in 1904 the union was only represented by Norwegian. According to Wikipedia: "Results from Norwegian athletes are typically considered separate from those of Swedish competitors despite the Union between Sweden and Norway that existed in 1900." Norway won five medals during the olympics.

	@wmbrennan: Han Yueshuang also competed for Hong Kong in Vancouver 2010. In other words the olympic nation of Hong Kong still seems to exist.

	The Federal Republic of Germany (colloquially known as "West Germany" during the Cold War) still exists, it's just that nobody calls it West Germany any more.

	Got East Germany, and I knew that with 1700+ athletes I was forgetting an obvious answer, and gave up. It was WEST Germany. Facepalm.

	out of interest where should the confederation of independent states (CIS) lie. Or is it within the USSR answer? They competed as a "nation" during the 92 summer and winter games and was made up of representatives from the nations of what was the soviet union.

	^That's covered as "Unified Team," which is a bonus answer. I tried to get as many alternate wordings as possible, but I think I missed the obvious one. It should work now.

	Phew, difficult. @erlking I got 'Netherlands Antilles' somehow but I'm not sure what I typed so you may want to check that. Also, the bonus for Austria & Hungary should be triggered with 'Austro-Hungary' too.

	As thedpr points out, the Federal Republic of Germany has been going strong since 1949. It picked up a lot of territory when the German Democratic Republic dissolved and rejoined it it in 1990, but it's the same, continuous government.

	Evidently Rhodesia only ever competed as a British territory. After its declared independence in 1970 it assembled a team but was expelled by the IOC four days before the Munich Olympics when other African nations threatened to boycott because they didn't recognize the legitimacy of the Rhodesian state. The country next competed as Zimbabwe. So Rhodesia missed this list by four days...bummer.

	You're right. I had assumed that despite competing as a British territory Rhodesia would have had it's own National Olympic Committee, Bermuda does for example, but it seems despite an application from Zimbabwe in 1934 the IOC didn't recognise it until 1980. So no Rhodesia shouldn't be an answer.

	West Germany definitely shouldn't be here - it's just a defunct colloquial way of saying the Federal Republic of Germany. Even the IOC says that Germany has been a recognised member of the Olympic movement since 1895. http://www.olympic.org/germany

	One more here to state the obvious about today's Germany being the same nation as the former "West Germany", which always was the FRG. On this point: Please do not accept GFR as has been suggested, it was GDR and FRG. (Similar case: there have always been United States of America. When the Confederate States split and later re-entered it does not end the history of the US and start a new history of the US, even if across the pond people would have talked about "North" and "South" States of America. Which they didn't. And it was before the Modern Olympic Games started. But I guess you'll still get the point)

	It's true that the FRG has been a continuous entity to which the eastern states were added, but is it the same entity as the Germany that competed up to 1936?
