Note: Once Northwest is completely integrated into Delta by February 2010, Delta will be the world's largest air carrier, but this quiz is based on 2008 data before the merger.

Good quiz, but I'd recommend accepting USAir for USAirways. I should have tried the long name, but once USAir didn't work, I moved on to airlines like Qantas, KLM, El Al, etc. Sadly, those didn't work.

Yeah Ryanair! Studying abroad in London is the only reason I know that one even exists...

Some merger related comments: I think United should be higher since the continental merger. Surprised no International Airlines Group (British Airways/Iberia). Does Air France include KLM numbers?

Good quiz, but very surprised that B.A. did not make the list. After all, a) I have seen adverts claiming that they are the world's biggest airline, and b) they go everywhere, don't they? I know that they are a British airline, but there aren't that many airlines which serve destinations the world over.

@transitfan - UA and Continental received their single operators licence in November and officially merged only this March 3rd, so maybe next year's edition? @Rob42 - Another measure of "size" is revenue passenger kilometers, which also takes into account the distance flown per passenger. It is with this measure that sprawling airlines like British Airways, Air France, and Emirates move up the rankings. It would be interesting to have a quiz with the top ten of both measures side by side.

Regarding the absence of BA: The source combines Int'l and Domestic flight totals. BA is # 6 in the world in Int'l flights, but doesn't rank among domestic flight leaders.

@isildur: While Southwest is a low-cost airline, it has a strong reputation for providing high-quality service at a reasonable price and isn't looking to tack on charges for every little thing. So it isn't exactly fair to call it the Ryanair of North America.

The chinese airlines inflate their numbers by putting political prisoners in the holds of old airplanes and giving them to the airlines to recycle for scrap. The prisoners ride the planes (mounted on rail) to the foundries but it counts as a flight.

The name of the company is also Southwest Airlines, not simply Southwest. Since you include "airlines" with other carriers, it should be included for SWA for consistency.

@WyattsTorch: The official name is "Our Airline".
A fun fact: Nauru could only be reached by a ridiculously long boat ride in late 2005 to early 2006 since their only airplane was repossessed. Our Airline still has only one airplane.

This quiz is won by domestic flights, all the American airline companies have best odds simply because the turnover rate of short flights, and no train system to compete with.

I live in China and didn't think about the Chinese airlines. But I'll bet if you did a quiz on the percentage of flights that were 100% full, they would top the list. I've never been on one that wasn't at capacity.

I too was surprised at BA's absence but then they're not so popular with short haul European flights, particularly since the rise of Easyjet and Ryanair.
