Besides Hanover, the various North German states - Hamburg, Saxony, Frankfurt, Hesse-Kassel - were neutral in 1805. They didn't fall under French control until after the Prussian defeat at Jena in 1806.

Great idea, but why is Ile-de-France separate from France?

It's not the modern day region of Ile-de-France but 'Île de France' which was the name of the Island that was renamed Mauritius in 1814.

I don't suppose the source material has the numbers for "Canada" broken down any further, does it? I only ask because Newfoundland and the Maritime Provinces were at the time separate from the Canadas, and they most likely would have provided most of the sailors.

Fair enough, carbon_rod, I hadn't split british north america up at all but canada wasn't unified untill much later so I've done it now. The source does contain birthtowns within canada so I've split the 31 canadians into 1 lower canadian, 2 nova scotians, 9 upper canadians and 19 newfoundlanders. Glad to give Newfoundland the credit it deserves.

Would have been better to accept Canada for both lower and upper Canada. Great quiz though.
