This is the second geography I made in the style of the excellent Countries of the World (Redux) quiz. I decided to give the maximum time allotment since I think the quiz is hard enough as it is (MUCH harder than the countries quiz IMO). As always, feedback and suggestions are always welcome (especially if you find a mistake; there's no guarantee that I spelled everything right on the first go)! Also, please check out my other quiz on U.S. state capitals.

It should be spelled Ouagadougou, other than that, great quiz.
Apr 24th, 2012 at 12:30 GMT
Anyone else easily get everything on the 'Capitals of the World' quiz but can barely get through one line on this one?
Apr 24th, 2012 at 12:31 GMT
^Just to clarify, that is Sporcle for this quiz is awesome beyond awesomeness. 5 globes and a nomination.
Apr 24th, 2012 at 14:14 GMT
You know all the capitals off by heart, then this quiz comes along and you start doubting. Is Jerusalem really the capital, is it Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh, Monaco or Monte Carlo...you successfully navigate your way round those mines, then BANG! It's all over because you temporarily lost your mind and couldn't stop yourself from clicking Gallipoli. 5*

love this quiz, much harder than you would first think
Apr 24th, 2012 at 15:47 GMT
I love these clickables, but for the mine quizzes it's for some reason remarkably more stressful to hover over the button rather than just type when you're not entirely sure. Sometimes I think Sporcle (and Minnesota sports) will kill me at a very young age.
Apr 24th, 2012 at 16:11 GMT
What? Isn't Philadelphia the capital of the US? And Constantinople that of the Ottoman Empire? And Edinburgh that of the Kingdom of Scotland? And Rio de Janeiro that of the Brazilian Empire? And Tenochtitlan that of the Aztecs? This quiz is too 21st century-centric.

too much time. I've done it in 5 min.
Apr 24th, 2012 at 19:55 GMT
@sjoerdarnts: Good catch. I have corrected it. @indianwolf1992: Thanks! Glad you liked it! @mykl: Yes, that's precisely why I liked the countries quiz so much, so I decided to make more in the same style. @deco: At first I thought I would give less time (maybe 6 or 8 minutes) since the countries quiz is 5 minutes, but decided it was hard enough without the time pressure. The results seem to agree! @McBeergio: I find them more stressful too. It's definitely a different style from the usual. Luckily, on Sporcle you can always live to play another day! @dancastro: Thanks for noticing. I had a lot of fun coming up with false answers. @rosinha: You must be a genius, because I can't complete it even though I made the quiz! I might consider reducing the time limit to 15 or 12 minutes if more people think the current time allotment is too much. We'll see. To everyone: please remember to rate if you enjoyed the quiz, and of course I'm always open to suggestions!
Apr 24th, 2012 at 23:03 GMT
Okay, I decided to reduce the time limit to 15 minutes. I don't expect it to really make much difference, but it should make "cheating" (slightly) more difficult. By the way, I tried playing this myself and lost at 160 (lol).
Apr 25th, 2012 at 12:02 GMT
My god that was difficult. I got through it, but after the first run through I realised I'd missed two of them. Missed the capitals of Botswana and Pakistan, even after reading all the remaining options. Also, I do so wish that Central African Republic Capital City was real. 5 globes and a nomination

Brilliant quiz, but I think for consistency with other Sporcle quizzes, you need to remove Colombo - it's accepted on other capital city quizzes and if someone comes across it before Kotte, they could understandably think that it's an acceptable answer.
Apr 25th, 2012 at 19:56 GMT
I'm with schmollie, Colombo was actually the one that tripped me up. Great quiz however.
Apr 25th, 2012 at 20:26 GMT
Marking Colombo as wrong? That's going to have people arguing til the cows come home.
Apr 25th, 2012 at 20:47 GMT
@milc: Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. @schmollie @Cryptus @ChileNoseJam: I agree. I have replaced Colombo with something else. Thanks for the feedback!

I officially hate Lagos right now!!
Apr 26th, 2012 at 22:22 GMT
My brain knows Istanbul isn't the capital of Turkey but my clicking finger clearly doesn't. :(
Apr 27th, 2012 at 20:37 GMT
Cool, this quiz is now an editor's pick. Thanks to everyone for playing/rating/favoriting/nominating/commenting!
Apr 27th, 2012 at 20:53 GMT
I clicked on Jotunheim after I read it as Jerusalem. Giant mistake.
Apr 27th, 2012 at 21:16 GMT
Fun quiz. I missed Tirana for a few minutes. The other sporcle quizzes tend to put it as Tirane. Wikipedia reckons it's an a with a funny accent, which of tirane and tirana is the better anglicised version?
Apr 27th, 2012 at 22:50 GMT
Awesome quiz! I got everything, but had to go back and found Taipei. This definitely required more thought than I originally assumed.
Apr 28th, 2012 at 00:45 GMT
Great quiz. Thanks for the long time limit. It takes some of the stress away.
Apr 28th, 2012 at 08:02 GMT
@jaa46 Definitely Tirana. Otherwise the e might be mistaken for silent - which is very wrong.
Apr 28th, 2012 at 12:55 GMT
No problem for the Editor Pick, remove the 'National' from the title though?
Apr 28th, 2012 at 20:40 GMT
Love it! Love it! Love it! Damn Saigon, Istanbul and Delhi! And very nearly got caught out on Belize City - sneaky!
Apr 28th, 2012 at 23:56 GMT
I wish we could see stats for which wrong answers are most often clicked. That would be interesting. @generalshrapnel: Interesting, I didn't plan that at all. Just don't make that same mistake when traveling! @jaa46 and @cuendillar: I used Wikipedia, so I copied whatever was there (minus the accents). At least in this quiz you don't have to type it out yourself! @coolg and @easty: Glad you liked it! @RobPro: Since I used Wikipedia as my source, I used the terminology on their page (added the link). @hocuspontas: Delhi and Belize City were two of the trickiest ones I added, and expected them to catch a few players. Especially since Belize City is a real place, and may get confused with its neighboring capital Guatemala City.

I think the game time limit should be halved (at least). I got fooled into clicking Zurich on my first go (having only just clicked Bern, ironically!), but my second go I completed it in just over 5 minutes. I could have done it 3 times over with the current time limit... and I wouldn't consider myself an elite at this either.
Apr 29th, 2012 at 13:16 GMT
In my defence, Samarkand is much nicer than Tashkent.
Apr 30th, 2012 at 22:49 GMT
Guess I'll never know which one I missed. Got them all bar one in a few minutes, then spent about ten minutes looking for the last one before giving up. :'(
May 1st, 2012 at 05:30 GMT
nooo i still had so many more rows to go!
May 1st, 2012 at 08:17 GMT
@mattyp90: I completed mine in 7:20, clicking at what I'd consider a moderate pace. Considering nearly 1/3 of players have failed to get past the first row, and over half have failed to complete the second row, I think the quiz is sufficiently challenging as is. As several other users have pointed out, the extra time can be beneficial. @Colmar: You're from Uzbekistan? That's cool! @JoeIsCool: I think that not knowing what you missed makes you want to play again and make sure you get every last one. At least that's how I felt when playing the countries quiz. @Frappuccino: Don't give up! Eventually you will figure it out. :)

To everyone: what false answers would you include if you were making this quiz? I'd love to hear your ideas!
May 6th, 2012 at 05:41 GMT
Ugh! This game is too long! I made it through eleven rows before—Oh look! Sparkles!!!
May 19th, 2012 at 01:03 GMT
AWESOME QUIZ!!! :D My favorite of your fake answers were probably Minas Tirith and Camelot. lol

You know a quiz is enjoyable when you keep restarting it after you make a mistake. Excellently done!
May 21st, 2012 at 05:16 GMT
Wow. As someone who knows all the capitals, I accepted defeat after 179/196 on my 5th try. Some of these inclusions are downright devilish, like Yangon, Abidjan, and San Juan. Once you get a head of steam going sometimes, you can't slow down, and those relocations—or the -uan vs. -ose—don't register completely. Great quiz.

amazingly tricky, but I amazingly got all at first try. I guess I am Sporcle-trained... If Tel Aviv was there I would have failed with that, though.
May 21st, 2012 at 06:25 GMT
My first four attempts all ended with just three right answers. Time to refine my technique... and got about 60 more before stumbling. Still no awards, but I'm much happier. Key to my (modest) success: just click the answers you are about 110% sure of. When you've swept them, you can go back and hit the ones you're just 99% sure of. If you are lucky, then you go back and.... you know the drill. I was tripped up by Nigeria's former capital, and the capital of Puerto Rico, which is not a nation. Argh, devilish! And of course some of the traps are just LOL funny, thank goodness. Wonderful quiz. I may burn another ten minutes right now and try again, even though I should be working.

got 132... most heartbreaking acknowledgment of Curacao I've ever made
