| Just to add to the Sewell story from DesertSpartan. The Chapman beaning occurred in August with the Indians in first place, just ahead of the Yankees (for whom Mays pitched) and White Sox. The Indians kind of struggled along for a few weeks with their backup infielders trying to fill Chapman's place, but none of them hit at all and they, therefore, brought up Sewell in early September in the heat of the pennant race, still with the Yankees and White Sox. The race came down to the last week, but eventually the Indians won (with some help from the fact that the Black Sox scandal from the prior year's World Series broke in the final week of the season and Cicotte, Jackson, Williams, Weaver, etc. were essentially suspended for the final few games) |
