To me, the differences are so small, that it's really more luck than skill in most cases.
Then there are the inherent problems with using RIAA as a source. The table is based on total gold and platinum albums, rather than actual sales. Those aren't awarded automatically: unless the record company pays for it, you don't get one. They are also based on shipments, not actual sales. Also, according to RIAA, the Beatles' self-titled "white" album (19x Platinum) has outsold Sgt Pepper (14x Platinum) or Abbey Road (12x Platinum). Why? Because a double album counts as two sales, not one. So actually, the white album sold about 9.5 million copies. |
