| @ alleyT, if you're looking for a religious correlation, it's nonexistant. The Muslim world used to be the first world in the days of the early Caliphates like the Abbasids. They inherited the greek and roman advances and ran with them. The Crusades, and centuries and centuries of crushing attacks from Mongols, Timurids, and Turks quashed all of that and the modern muslim world is mostly post colonial mess thanks to both Turkey, Brits, and the French circa WWI. Of course a lot of these are also hyper rich countries, Brunei,and the Gulf countries. Malaysia is on the rise as well.
