There are some countries I expected to be on here: North Korea, China, Colombia, Mexico, Brazil... wonder why they're not?

@chriskotx-north korea deserves to be on a lot of lists, but they never release adequate data

@chriskotx China for one has such a large population; the proportion imprisoned isn't actually that high. the USA just likes to lock up the victims of its uncaring, greed-driven society.

@flixuk: or could it be that the USA actually cares enough about its law-abiding citizens that it does a better job of attempting to protect them from those who deserve incarceration (or worse)?

Interesting how so many of them are ex-USSR countries or around the Caribbean.

@chriskotx: while flixuk's analysis is faulty i must say yours is as well. the USA simply locks up its citizens for crimes that do not endanger anyone except for the person committing the crime. no one is being protected when Jim goes to prison for 5 years for having a baggie of cocaine on him.

@chriskotz-you're kind of being a stereotypical texan. the reason why we're the highest is because of our ridiculous reaganist laws regarding drug possession, especially cocaine.

Thank you both for bringing the drug possession/incarceration issue to the forefront. That is an issue that is properly debatable. (My belief is that incarceration is not even the proper and most effective response to crime.) My statement was in reaction to flixuk's stereotypically socialist statement concerning the US's supposed capitalist motives for "locking up (societal) victims". I will agree with anyone that there is an imbalance in the penalties meted out to drug possessors in relation to some others who commit greater offenses. But I do know that cocaine kills and should be somehow regulated. And I'm kinda complimented to be referred to as a "stereotypical texan" :)

@chriskotx-so we're pretty much on the same page. its nice how on sporlce people can have intelligent discussions about controversial issues, while on many other forums this would turn into a shouting match
