Since you take The Gambia, you should also take The Philippines, The Bahamas, and The Netherlands.

You should accept East Timor and Ivory Coast since those are commonly accepted answers for those countries.

this is a tough quiz to put together b/c of so many different options on names, but it is a fun one...my thought would be to add "based on names used by sporcle in their countries quizzes", which would eliminate many of the ones listed above...i enjoyed it!

I fixed all of the problems. I removed The Gambia, China, Macedonia, and Micronesia. B_Train, I dont know what exactly you want, so if you want me to add in alternate answers, please be more specific.

Timor-Leste or East Timor is in Asia not Oceania

The Gambia really should be on this quiz. On Countries of the World, "the Gambia" is the answer. Philippines, Bahamas and Netherlands all show up without "the."

I have added on more alternate names and decided to change the quiz back to my original one in that The Gambia is counted as madikins2 is correct. I based this off of the countries of the world quiz for the most part. Also, I fixed the Oceania/Asia mistake. Careless error. Sorry. Any more mistakes found or complaints please let me know. If anyone wants to nominate this, that'd be great too.

Take out The Gambia. I don't know why there's this idea that the 'the' is somehow inseparable from the name, but it's discardable for Netherlands, Philippines, UK, USA, UAE, ____ Islands. It makes no sense!

Again. I have made the final ruling to include the gambia as on the sporcle country quiz it says "the gambia". It does not say the Philippines or the netherlands

Nice quiz! I think you should add "Federated States of Micronesia" as that's the official name according to the CIA world factbook and the Sporcle "Countries of Oceania" quiz.

And it is THE United States of America. If you are going to include Gambia, you should include all the countries that include "the", even if other quizzes don't. Anything else is just plain silly.

I have added more alternate answers. As for the word "the" my choice is final. Neostinker is right. The Gambia is the only country to officially use "the." I will re-add macedonia and micronesia, but will not change the uk. Also, i am not sure whether or not to add "the people's republic of china" and "the republic of china". If anyone has any input, let me know. And converge, sorry about asking to be nominated, i just want to make an official quiz.

When I typed in "Ivory Coast" it submitted Timor-Leste, they are not the same thing your alternate answer is in the wrong spot, the Ivory coast is Cote d'Ivoire.

North Korea's officially the People's Democratic Republic of Korea or the Korean People's Democratic Republic. Taiwan's the Republic of China. And the UK's officially the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

i know tons of people from macedonia and all ive ever heard them call it is macedonia. if your going with the republic of macedonia then you might as well take the offical names of other countries, I.E. the republic of ireland or the russian federation.

@doubleblack, good quiz. With all the suggestions and counter-suggestions above, you might by now have lost the will to live. If not, though, how about employing a rule such as "I'll include a country if I don't definitely know which country it is without the extra word(s)". That would mean you could safely omit slightly silly-looking inclusions such as Gambia, Macedonia and Micronesia. (Just my 2d!)

Macedonia has a "name issue" with Greece, but Sporcle standard is just MACEDONIA, not Republic of Macedonia, and not embarrassing Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

The official names of the countries themselves are useless as source material for this quiz because the vast majority of countries in the world have multiple words in their official name. (The Kingdom of the Netherlands, the United Mexican States, The Swiss Confederation). If you try to use official names as a basis, you might as well destroy the entire quiz. Using sporcle standard is acceptable, even though it is silly to attach 'the' to one country and not another.
