Cuba? That was a surprise. Also way too much time.

Only missed romania and cuba - was just a case of naming big countries, followed by rich countries - by the way randomly guessed panama and it came up as a bonus answer even though it was less than 100 miles - why was this?

cool quiz. i got a bonus by trying paraguay (36km!) so spent a minute trying to think of countries with the smallest networks and go cuba!

You should probably add commas to the numbers just to make them easier to read. and never under estimate how color can change the way people think of your quiz.

Would Sudan still count under the rankings with South Sudan newly-independent?

@andrew_c ther is no misplaced comma in the first ranked figure. We Indians number that way. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_numbering_system :P @ryan_hm gud observation i don't think as the source has data for 2010 when South Sudan was part of Sudan

Argentina does have a lot of rail, but it seems that not many lines actually operate there. The buses are too cheap and comfortable.

Cuba does not actually completely surprise me. I only typed it on a hunch, but communist countries of the 20th century tended to strive for industrial capacity, and then boast of these achievements as proof that their communism works.

Remove the first comma from the top figure. Indians may number that way, but nobody else does.

@Bulletchewer6: good point! Firstly I thought that the 2,24,792 was a typo, but reading your comment I remembered the Indian system of numbering, with the lakhs, crores and all that. As you say, nobody else uses it... but in fact the Indians invented the so called "Arabic" numerals.

How are you defining 'rail network'? Paraguay has a lot more than 36 km, but most of it is disused... 'There were also a number of narrow-gauge industrial lines, mainly in the North of the country, that total over 600 km of track; built to bring agricultural production to the ports on the Rio Paraguay, they also carried passengers; some of those lines, quite extensive (some over 150 km in length) still exist, even if no longer in use.'

Nepal is also a bonus answer. Why not Palau (0 km)?

@bahhbara i am not defining ' rail network' just using CIA World Factbook as a source and sticking to what they are saying unless i get a more reliable source. @EssesNine97 the source lists only 134 entries (some not even sovereign nations) so i guess the remaining countries might not be having any railway network or no information. So, i have not included any of them as bonus answers.

Vatican City actually has a rail line! It's about 300 metres long and it's only used by the pope. You don't believe me? Check this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rail_transport_in_Vatican_City
