I prefer to say I'm from the Great Lakes region rather than "Midwest." People who have guessed where I'm from based on my accent have named every single one of these states + Ontario, so I think there's a real common bond. (Although only Upstate New York really belongs to the region, if you base it on accent.) It also beats saying I'm from the "Rust Belt." ;)
