There are only 8 canadian teams between the 4 leagues is it that big a deal to include them, rather than having sorry messages appear.

this is basically a name the teams of the big 4 sports, starting with who you think would be the most popular. i really like the idea of the quiz but its too easy to get all of them just from guessing.

Something is off about this. First, don't bother including the NHL without the Canadian teams. Second, I find it hard to believe that a huge metro area like Los Angeles doesn't have more support behind the Angels or Dodgers than smaller market teams like the Astros and Mariners. Or the Lakers?

2 surprises that i saw: 1. yankees were not higher, 2. dodgers did not make the list at all.

JORDAN, good enough to keep the bulls popular for ten years after his retirement. also, the astros is a pretty huge market houston is the fourth biggest city in the us

The sample is way too small so far. I love the idea of mapping teams' popularity though. With a nationwide poll the Yankees, Lakers, and Cowboys would end up on top.

I find it EXTREMELY hard to believe that the Astros are more popular than the Dodgers, Mets, Phillies, or Angels. Unlikely to the point that it pretty much invalidates the source.

@ brianyankees: Canadian teams don't even make the top 10 (the highest is Vancouver at 22nd) because the site the information comes from only polls Americans. The Raptors (29th) and Blue Jays (29th) don't make the top 10 either. It's not like i omitted the Canadian teams from the top 10, they just weren't as popular to Americans.

@mrprocrastinator is right on target calling out the bandwagoneers. studying abroad in the nineties, i found everyone who knew american football was either a cowboys, niners, or bills fan. now, it's all boston all the time. (yeah, jealous, but still, making a point...)

The 76ers are 5th? Really? Over the LAKERS?? I love my 76ers and all, but they are dreadful to watch. More Philly fans would rather watch Villanova or Temple than the 76ers.

as a proud Canadian, its nice to see that Americans, especially those from cities in the north (like, perhaps, BOSTON,)are still angry over Sunday. I guess sporcle is as good a place as any to vent. Just remember.... "Iginla....in front Crosby Scores! Sidney Crosby, the GOLDEN Goal!"

I'm really interested to know which sad sack teams couldn't even beat the blue jays or raptors, or the few hockey teams when voted on by just americans.

Houston is the fourth biggest city, but nowhere near the fourth biggest media market - besides the big 3, Philly, San Francisco, Boston, DC, Dallas, and Atlanta are all bigger media markets.

The most impressive (because most lasting) performer is Chicago. The Cubs are the Cubs, even with a few recent playoff appearances. Yet they're 2nd. The Bears, again despite a couple good teams this decade, are 3rd. And they've been hibernating most of the years since the NFL became huge. The Blackhawks just took 20 years off, and haven't won a cup since god knows when - they're 4th. And the Bulls have been awful to mediocre since Jordan retired - 12 years - and they're still first. That's staggering, really. No other city has anything quite similar. The Boston teams have all been really good. Most of the other teams are on the list either because they had dynasties at some point or are simply old teams in big markets. But Chicago alone is consistently higher than the results would indicate they ought to be, and even when far removed from any kind of real success.

Man, good to know the 76ers are more popular than the Lakers. I live around Philly, and I think I've seen more Laker jerseys than I have Sixers. Not to mention the Sixers are the LEAST popular team (probably goes Eagles.Phillies...........Flyers...Sixers) in Philly and the Lakers are the most popular in LA...

I call BS on this. The Lakers should be # 1, as should the Yankees, Cowboys and Canadiens. Sorry, but Chicago and Boston don't rule the world of sports...not even close.

Yeah, there is no way this is correct. It is widely known that the Lakers, Yankees and Cowboys have, far and away, the most bandwagon fans in their respective sports. And as much as I'd like to believe it, I don't think my Wizards would crack the top 10.

@statdis: not sure about that, the Red Sox blew up in popularity after '04. I'd say they are the bandwagon team of the decade.

If you don't like the quiz, go out and do your own survey. Do it right and see what the results say.
