Can you name the countries that are most average in terms of population & area?
Enter a country name in the box below
Correctly named countries will show up below
Answers do not have to be guessed in order
Dependencies are not included in the statistics, but disputed areas are attributed to the country that controls them (meaning Morocco includes Western Sahara, Israel includes Gaza & the West Bank)
Note: These are the countries closest to the World's arithmetic mean in each category (see the first archived comment for an example of the calculations)

Average World area = 136,260,608 [total country area] / 195 [total number of countries] = 698,772.35 sq km
Average World pop = 6,922,430,842 [total country pop] / 195 [total number of countries] = 35,499,645
*note that these averages exclude the area and population of dependencies
An example of the calculations for Kyrgyzstan (area: 199,951 sq km, population: 5,587,443):
AREA = (199,951 [Kyrgyzstan area] - 698,772.35 [Average area])/698,772.35 [Average area] = -71.39%
POP = (5,587,443 [Kyrgyzstan pop] - 35,499,645 [Average pop])/35,499,645 [Average pop] = -84.26%
AREA + POP = (|-71.39%| [Kyrgyzstan area] + |-84.26%| [Kyrgyzstan pop]) / 2 = 77.82%
Each percentage is how far off the World average each country is in that category, a positive percentage indicates a greater than average population or area, a negative percentage indicates a lower than average population or area, all combined percentages are positive. Statistics are from CIA World Factbook, where a country controls a disputed area, the statistics for those areas are added to the total country statistics.

Good quiz! (pstt.. UganDa)

It would have helped if my mind could keep track of the fact that huge in one category isn't the same as huge in the other. "Canada? No way, that country's enormous. Why should I even bother typing it?. (3 minutes later) Oops."

Very enjoyable quiz. Funny, there seems no shame in missing answer, it's kinda the fault of that country for being so utterly average.
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 12:34 GMT
Haha, the bonuses were so funny that I got kind of sidetracked and started guessing them and didn't get terribly far with the actual quiz. I think I got 8 bonuses...did I miss any?

Great quiz, though as a math grad student I find myself questioning whether the statistics are really presented in a meaningful way. So I'm going to geek out here a little bit about the math, if you don't mind. According to the statistical method used in this quiz, it is possible for a country to have a huge positive percentage (China scores +3687.12% in population), but a negative percentage can never be lower than −100%. So the percentages would suggest that a country with zero area and zero population would be more average than a country that is a little over twice as big as the average in both categories (for example, Iran), which doesn't seem right to me. Rather than comparing the numbers directly, I would suggest taking logarithms first, and then computing the differences of the logs from the log of the average (just straight-up differences, not percentages). That way, a country that is twice as big as average will come out to be the same "distance" from average as a country that is half as big as average, which seems a little more reasonable to me.

good quiz! if i can be a little geeky (but less geeky than the comment above!) wouldn't median average be better than the mean in this instance? not sure that the mean is that meaningful, if you'll pardon the pun! although this data might be harder to come by...

Not your average quiz. Five globes!

No Russia, China or Vatican City? You gotta be kidding me!

For those interested in statistics, of the 195 Sporcle-recognized countries (the UN couldn't be bothered):
The MEDIANs are:
- the MEDIAN area is Malawi (118,484 sq km)
- the MEDIAN population is Bulgaria (7,093,635 people)
The LOG-AVERAGEs (see zifyoip's comment) are:
- the closest LOG-AVERAGE area is Panama (75,420 sq km)
- the closest LOG-AVERAGE population is the UAE (5,148,664 people)
- the closest combined LOG-AVERAGE country is Sierra Leone (71,749 sq km, 5,363,669 people)

I would avoid using an example in the description that is actually an answer in the quiz.
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 19:44 GMT
@ Dunnski: Lol, I checked because of your comment. I got the 49th percentile. Extremely average.

Mar 23rd, 2011 at 20:11 GMT
I got 9 of the 10 bonus answers and tried everything conceivable for the 10th. No luck. (I got 4 large ones, 4 small ones, and Kyrgyzstan)
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 20:37 GMT
marpocky - the one you're probably missing is the United Kingdom, it won't show up for "UK" so that it doesn't get in the way of Ukraine (an actual answer) but it's included because a significant number of people on this site are from the UK

The third column seems a little redundant. Maybe use HDI. But then again, its an editor pick, so who am I to nitpick.

Missed Madagascar. I never remember it.But very nice quiz indeed. I wonder though: why the bonuses weren't appearing in the area column?
