| matt01 - The flags included are used in an official capacity by these respective governments. Scotland and Wales both have devolved governments that use the flags shown in this quiz, England does not yet have a devolved government (see West Lothian question) so there is no government entity to declare an official flag and, as BBC Country Profiles says, "Markers of specific English identity, such as the flag of St George, tend to be unofficial." The other constituent country missing, Northern Ireland, previously had an official flag, but has not had one since the 1970's and today the Northern Ireland government uses the Union Flag for all applicable official functions. Flags are used by various non-governmental bodies in these places (like football associations and the church) but not by the governments, which is the standard used for inclusion on this quiz. |
