	On many quizzes it seems the British complain that "the rest of the English speaking world calls it football" while Americans think that "Futbol" is the official name of the sport rather than just a Spanish translation and both sides ignore the fact that many countries use both "Soccer" & "Football", it turns out the rest of the world is just tired of listening to people complain and just wants to play the game I tried to include all the countries that used "soccer" in their media and organisations; suggestions on additions, subtractions, and corrections are welcome and appreciated

	i think the issue is that 'football' means soccer to 95% of the world population, but to many americans it means american football. Soccer is very much the secondary term in pretty much the whole planet (including the countries you mention), but it's not wrong. I think it winds people up that americans have the arrogance to claim the term football for what is, by some margin at the global level, a minority sport.

	here in australia football means the afl and everyone i know usually says soccer but the ffa changed their name to football because people call it that in other places but not here though

	wondernick - by that standard, Australians, Irish, New Zealanders, and Canadians display the same arrogance of claiming the term football for the codes most popular in their countries (Australian, Gaelic, Rugby, & gridiron) rather than association football, the point is that it means different things to different people and it's arrogant to assume either term should be the only name globally Also your 95% number is high, while the majority call it football (or a direct translation of that) a significant number of nations primarily use other names, for example: - In Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, & USA "soccer" is the primary term in conversation - In Ireland, football by itself does not refer to association football without context - Many foreign language names directly translate as "kickball", which is a different game in English - In Italy association football is called "calcio" meaning "kick" - Japan uses football & soccer in English, but primarily uses "sakkā" over "futtobōru" in Japanese - In Germany, saying "football" in English refers to American football While "football" commonly means association football, significant parts of the world don't rigidly use that term

	@diving - I don't think it's arrogant to think that "football" should be the global term. It is the global norm in most dialects of most languages and, as a global sport, it seems more important that it has a single word across the world than, say aubergine/eggplant. More importantly it just makes no sense to refer to a game not primarily played with the feet as "football" - so this really bugs me. Also, in Ireland my experience is that football out of context implies association football. I've spent more time in the North than the Republic though. And the German word for association football is still the literal equivalent of "football" - so I don't really think it counts as an exception to the rule. My experience in Ireland is that football by itself implies association football. Admittedly this is largely (not entirely) in the North but I've only heard Gaelic football referred to with by full name, whereas I've heard association football referred to just as "football" when I've been there. And in Germany although saying football in English may mean American football (never heard of that before though) the actual German word for association football does translate literally into "football".

	Also in the off chance that somebody wants to know the origins of the word soccer - it was slang among the upper classes in the 19th century (Oxbridge and public school people I think), presumably to distinguish it from Rugby football which I don't think was abbreviated just to "rugby" yet. For whatever reason it stuck in some parts of the world whereas most of the other slang words of that time ending in "-er" died a just death. Personally I hate the term though, as football is far more descriptive (says all you need to know about the game!) and soccer is just a hideously ugly word.
