| @indianwolf1992: "East Indies" was used by Early Modern Europeans to refer to all those lucrative, far-away spicy lands of South & SE Asia, actually including India. "East Indians" was used to differentiate from West Indians, i.e. people from the West Indies, i.e. the Caribbean (the term "West Indies" itself coming from initial European belief that the Caribbean was in Asia). Nonetheless, the term "East Indies" isn't much used anymore, seeing as geographic knowledge has generally improved since the 15th century. |
