	The easiest concept in football is that to win you have to build from your lines, offensive and defensive, out. The Lions repeatedly took skill players before they had their lines in place and got killed for it. I always hate NFL analysts who laud picking quarterbacks high on terrible rosters. They always say, "To win in the NFL, you need a franchise quarterback." No rookie quarterback is going to succeed on a team without any sort of running game, and with an offensive line that allows him to get killed every game. I couldn't believe it when the Lions passed on Michael Oher for Brandon Pettigrew, a luxury TE, this year. I was mad then, and even madder now that Oher looks like the steal of the draft.

	@cochiseTX, agree overlooking Oher was a mistake (we have been blessed in Denver that we drafted Clady high in 08) but Pettigrew looks like a decent player rather than a 'luxury'. Stafford needs to have a check down guy like him on the team.

	How Jeff Backus has had the patience to stay with the Lions I'll never know. It's amazing how bad of a general manager Millen really was. He can analyze games nicely, but cannot pick guys to suit his team to save his life

	Here's (some) defense of Millen draft picks: Can't blame Matt Millen for Kevin Jones' injury woes, Jones was a solid football player. He could catch the ball and had open-field speed that saved him from averaging less than 3.8 yards per carry on an absolutely dreadful Lions team. Millen also put Kevin Smith in Detroit, who I feel is a very similar player to Kevin Jones in terms of being a back with all the tools. Corey Redding was a 3rd round pick in 2003 and really one of the brighter spots in Lions' history this decade until traded for Julian Peterson. And I thought Millen's first draft was in the right place. He drafted Backus in the 1st then Shaun Rogers and Dominic Raiola in the 2nd. Two of those guys are starters still and another is one of the league's premiere DT's...despite being a lackluster teammate. Still, he didn't draft ANY good starters in the secondary and didn't consistently restock on linemen on both sides of the ball. Even his linebacking core was weak with the exception of Ernie Sims, who so far hasn't lived up to that very high draft choice despite being a decent player. Hard to believe he lasted beyond that 2005 selection of Mike Williams.

	@ LondonBlue--which sports can't we "cope with the pace of?" I love--really do--soccer and cricket, but the former is completely slow (several burgers and fries in between interesting moments) and the latter, glacial (beautiful, but glacial; I could eat an entire cow, much less a burger). Come on across the pond and let us show you a hockey game.

	@zzz: Football (soccer) is slow? Give me a break! Granted, hockey is fast, and maybe basketball, but the other 2 are pedestrian. However, I do love NFL, but that probably stems from being a rugby player. In any case, the original comment was made with my tongue firmly planted in my cheek. Seriously though - when was the last non-US sports game on the sporcle front page?
