| OK, so this is going to get a bit obtuse, but bear with me. The point of this quiz is to answer the question, "Which team would be the best in 2010 if they had never traded away, or lost to free agency, their best players?" To answer this question, I compiled the best active players at each position, for each team, based on the team they made their MLB debuts with (NOT necessarily the team that originally drafted them). They are ranked by career WAR, so there might be some washed-up veterans on here, and "active" is defined as a player who played in 2010, so retired players may be included, and injured players may be excluded. A player qualifies at a position if he played at least 50% of his career at that position, so it is possible some multiposition stars are omitted. “RP” is any relief pitcher – it is often a closer, but not necessarily. If a player's WAR is denoted with "(R)," that means that either no player qualified under these conditions, or all players who did have negative career WAR, indicating that the optimal player for that position is a replacement player - so when you see that, simply type "replacement" and you will get a bunch of correct answers, merry Christmas. All OF positions are grouped together - that is, this is the three best outfielders, RF, CF and LF are not distinguished. This is the sequel to the AL version - see the source link. Also, since Sporcle limits to 200 answers, there wasn't room for a 5-man rotation like in the AL version, so I had to limit it to a 3-man rotation to keep it under 200. Sorry about that! Hope this makes sense and enjoy! |
