| Keep in mind, this quiz uses Baseball-Reference's WAR formula (my least favorite of the three). Fangraphs only gives Lonnie Smith a 8.2 for his 1989 campaign, and Baseball Prospectus gives him a 7.6. It's also important to note that Smith led the league in OBP that year and was 5th in slugging, and 1989 was a down year for LFs. This already wasn't the 6th best season for a LF (factoring out the many times Ruth, Bonds, et al had single-season WARs higher than Smith's '89), but WAR doesn't claim to show what seasons were the "best" anyway. Seeing as Smith led the league in OBP and had a very good SLG, it was a down year for LFs, and he was a very good defensive player during that part of his career, I can see how his WAR would be very high, especially given the BR formula's perceived relative weight on defense. |
