You need to add a basis for calling players active. Nick Johnson is active -- he's on a minor league contract with the Indians and is rehabbing from last year's injury -- he just hasn't played in the major leagues in 2011. Milton Bradley, on the other hand, is not "active" in any meaningful sense.

I just used baseball-reference's "active" selection, then got rid of players who hadn't played in the majors in 2011.
