| OK, so to summarize, here is my argument for and against the handful of controversial teams:
1) blackhawks: yes, officially named after either chief black hawk, a person, or after a type of helicopter or military platoon. However, also the name of a type of animal. Included. 2) Blue Jackets: not an animal; rather, a jacket. a Blue jacket. Not an alternate subspecies of the yellowjacket - a coat. Not included. 3) Buffalo Bills - named after a person, Buffalo Bill Cody. The CITY is named after an animal, but not the team. Not included. 4) Red wings - origin unknown; however, no source I found seems to refer to it as anything in particular, any depiction of it is as a wheel with a wing attached to it. At best, named after a body part of an animal, rather an an animal itself. Not included. 5) Browns - some people seem to think a "Brown" is a type of animal. It is not; it is a color, and the team was named after a guy whose last name was Brown. Not included. |
